can any one tell me to pros and cons of braid and mono on a spining surf reel?

Pros? for braid not many...mostly hype...Braid is terrible around rocks and reefs, braid is difficult to tie knots with, braid can cut your finger off if your not carefull, Braid sinks to fast for most aplications, its best suited for sandy beaches and even then isnt needed...Its best aplication is for deep jigging , fluke fishing etc..No one has "done better" off the beach because they use braid over mono, its all in there heads..

Mono is proven for many, many many years of reliability, Mono has landed far more fish than braid, mono has caught plenty of bass, mono is more forgiving around rocks and structure, mono is more forgiving on Conventional tackle...Mono just plain has proven itself time and time again.Mono is less expensive than braid, Mono is easier to handle than braid.

Braid is like cement it has great lateral strength but poor tensile strentgh...Braid is strong on the Pull but is cut like butter when dragged over rocks etc...Some guys say they have much more line capacity....its BS Because it doesnt matter...No bass will spool a reel filled with mono any easier than they will braid...

My personal experiance is at least 1000 shore caught bass each season when I heavily surfed fished up to 2 years ago, many of those where good sized fish, the braid craze just didnt hold water.

Be carefull becaus alot of guys will try and sell you swamp land in Florida if you let them...You will do fine with Mono

i have used both and do agree you will do perfectly fine with mono, however there are gains in casting distance using braid because of its thin diameter. of course this is what also makes it dangerous

For me, both have their pros and cons depending on the situation. I've been using braid for years now after using mono exclusively. It took me a while to get used to it but I won't turn back now. I like braid because I can cast it much further than mono and the sensitivity of braid is a huge plus for me, you are able to feel hits that you may not feel with mono. Also, more line capacity with braid is a plus, not that I'm afraid of getting "spooled" but because I am able to cut back line due to wear and chafing and know that I have plenty left on the spool. I get more life out of braid than mono also, I've gone 2 years before respooling without any problems, and I fish a lot more that the average guy. I have not had a problem with break offs in the rocks with braid, surf or boat fishing, but I do use a mono leader anywhere from 4-8' long. I also like that braid will sink and stay much straighter in the water than mono, I hate the line loop you get with mono especially when you have current, braid cuts thru the water better and pretty much keeps you in contact with your lure/bait at all times. I know peaple do complain about wind knots and cuts on their fingers they get from braid, I don't have that problem very often, I think once you get used to using braid the problems go away, you need to get the feel for it. Now with all that being said, I do use mono on a few of my heavy conv. reels for livelining bunker and trolling where sensitivity is not an issue.:wave:

how do people feel about braid on conventional. can you still gain casting distance?

Like I said, for many many years guys had no problem using mono, sensitivety was and is really not an issue with Striped bass....Maybe other fish but not bass, they are not shy about hitting whatever it they hit...On a conventional reel, use mono

I realize its what ever someone likes etc...But for the most part, especially in striped bass fishing it does not give you anything that would be considered and advantage..I keep going back to it but its important..I never saw anyone in the late 80s right until the current day have any issues catching fish with mono...There isnt a commercial guy around who uses braid and they put there 5 fish in the boat every day...Under bright sunlight.

Bottom line is you asked a question and you will get 100 different answers, what I stated is my opinion and mine only..

Exept for ( Dave)F18 Who, is a good fisherman and does catch fish using braid! I do not know anyone at all that uses the stuff and there are some high liner names on the list..Those that have switched back in a hurry..I have along with fishing partners jigged all the breachways, fished plenty of currents etc without issue while using mono and had plenty of hookups with fish

In the end, There is most likely no differnce at all..You use what you want to use...It all works

All these questions get different answers, The best thing to do is make your own judgements and try for yourself..Thats the only way to get an answer that works..

Listening to me or anyone else does nothing for you as an individual..Its like some guys hate conventional and some spinning, all this is up to the fisherman who is using the stuff ..

I usually carry rods with both ..& switch off depending what kind of fishing I,m doing :;

But there are two real pluses I like with braid .. [1] the laydown after the cast ;;
&& there is no line that can come close to competing again it in the {REEL} code weather ::

Forgot about that...Clammers right..Ever try casting mono when it's freezing cold out?? Comes off the spool like wire..Braid isn't affected much by cold..

The pros and cons have already been mentioned, so I will just say that I use and like both. The sensitivity of braid is undeniable, especially on LONG cast. No line stretch to deal with, and less missed strikes.

What I use is braid on most on my Abu's, and some others.
While I use Fireline on my spinners. I works well for me this way.
I like the thin diameter, of the superlines, and the strength.
It is really a personal preference my friend, you use what works for you.
That's why there are so many on the market.:wave:

Maybe we should give this topic another go-around, since it's been over 2 years since the last comment.

Anyone think differently now?
