April 15 - Opening Day for Tautog

So did anyone go Tog fishing in RI yesterday?

When's your first tautog outing going to take place?

Crabs or worms? Do you believe their mouths are too soft for crabs at this time of year?

BTW, I tossed in a few more herring shots on the Fish_Eye thread.

Here are a few tog shots I like:

I'll be trying for tog in the next few days. In the areas I fish they readily hit crabs early in the season. Soft baits are normally cleaned off by choggies.

They're all good but that first shot is GREAT, Mike - :kewl:

Thanks!

I'm waiting for a while - I've got a spot where I can sight-fish for them on light tackle but probably won't hit it for at least a week or 10 days water temps depending - already have my float rigs done up, actually finished 'em this AM

Worms - works for me...;)

Now all I've gotta do is pick up the vermouth for the Drunken Blackfish Stew...:drool:

If any of you guys who Tog, feel like sharing (technique, GENERAL areas etc)... I've never tried it and would like to from the Yak this year. If you feel like sharing via PM, I'd be very appreciative.

BTW, whats a choggie? Is that the same fish as a cunner?

They definitely take crabs in the spring where I’m fishing – also like using worms or clams in the spring since there are usually less bait stealers around this time of year.

I’ll try a few times this spring in the boat or kayak and if that fails there is always the spear gun :devil: the water needs to warm up a bit though before I’m going swimming!

Jimmy:
When we were kids we would catch them off the West Wall by the bucket load. I believe they are a member of the croaker family.

Drunken Blackfish Stew (Serves 6)

1 - Large Blackfish

4 - Liters Dry Vermouth

Place large blackfish in stockpot. Add 1 liter vermouth, simmer slowly, stirring occasionally. Distribute last 3 liters of vermouth among friends. When friends begin to look worse than the blackfish, remove stockpot from heat and serve.

:hihi:

Chuck, I hope that stews makes it to the club meeting.

Hot damn, I forgot about togging.

I might give it a shot next weekend in Nantucket sound. We'll see what happens.

I'll give it a try. And if I get in trouble I'm ratting you out.

I saw one boat in one place & 3 in another today / when we were coming back from schoolie fishing ;

I like early May in the shallows // very soft bait ... similiar to CraftY,s style & in the fall >> deeper as it gets colder //all crabs then ;;;

Cunner :uhuh:

Good Live bait when you can get them big enough....Clammer might be a good resource, I heard he was good at catchin' choggies. :conf:
