Yakking Westport River

Got out with some folks yesterday, including a guy I met on NEKF.
Went upriver from Rte 88 bridge, fished various rips. Caught a lot
of schoolies using a Yo Zuri crystal minnow, nothing over 20".
Tried around 88 bridge for togs and scup, no luck. Beautiful weather
got choppy later so I couldn't get to the mouth where the other
good action is. Tried chunking off Hix Bridge, no luck, but saw some
small fish in the water. Nice day OTW!

Use to plug at hix bridge in the spring when the herring were running .. nice spot but locals will call the cop on you in a minute if you dont have a permit

The mouth is good but boy do you need to hit the tides right or suffer a very difficult peddle or paddle back to the ramp. If you can ride the bottom of the tide out and fish the last 90 minutes of the outgoing, the ride back in is so much less work. The mouth is always good in the fall, but like any well known spot and bite, the boat traffic and run and gun nuts make it tougher on the kayaker.

Yeah, that's how it worked out late last summer; rode the tides down in the PM and fished the bottom at the inlet. Hit some striper blitzes then too, but no keepers. The currents in Westport are such that you can't really fight 'em in a yak. Wouldn't even think about trying to go out the inlet in a yak; can get fooled into going out into calmer conditions, then get dumped on the way in. Very dangerous inlet.

Got sent into a spin cycle in my little Sturdee once.... never again. In a small water-vessel, when that inlet speaks to you, you better listen...

Years ago I kayaked the entire length of both east and west branches. Strong current made it challenging.
I've fished from high upon the Knubble a few times during rough weather..... had some laughs as boaters came out of the inlet not knowing what they were about to encounter, then trying to turn and run back in. ...I have done this in my own boat.
