New Paint
Im due for a new face lift. My gel coat might have a season or 2 left. Looking at some new awlgrip options. Anyone recently go with new paint? Thinking awlgrip bright aluminum.

I paint my boat every few years with one part International Brightside polyurethane. Relatively inexpensive compared to an awl grip job.
If your doing the awl grip yourself and spend the time on prep it can be relatively inexpensive. What I am saying is this. If your having this done professional for $5-6K it will look great until that jig bounces of the hull or you hit the dock hard and then your a bit pissed. Be practical about it if you paying $$ to have it done, better things to spend $$ on................ |
Since you say you have a season or two left, try using Rejex on the hull instead of wax until you paint. Just be sure to clean/strip off existing wax on hull before applying. Polymer vs wax.

IMHO you're better off using imron, not as brittle as awlgrip so much less damage when that sinker or jig bounces off the hull.

ill get a price comp on the Imron to the Awgril. I defintley want to go with a light color for less maint. My navy blue is a pia to keep up with.

Look into epiphanes 2 part topside paint. I just helped a friend roll and tip a Westsail 42 with it and it came out awesome.
I know for sure it costs less than awlgrip. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |

I painted a Mako with Alwcraft, went on pretty easily, looks great and it is repairable.

My boatyard is recommending the Awlcraft 2000. Says the repairing is a lot easier if I come in a little hot on the dock:)

Sounds like the right choice between the two. Just finished reading the differences between the two, including the performance and repair.
And guess what they recommend finishing the repair with?.... A polymer, like Rejex. NOT wax! |

I’ve been painting for 40 years, The only Difference between Imron & Awlgrip in Imron is Duponts version of a polyester urethane. Awlgrip is Akkzo Nebel’s version of a polyester urethane AwlCraft 2000 is also a Akkzo Nobel product but it’s an Acrylic Urethane. PPG, RM, Glasurate are other companies that also have their own versions. There are even others only available to the government that are better than all of them. Neither Imron, Awlgrip or Awlcraft match the durability of gelcoat but you will never get a gelcoat to look as good as a professional Urethane paint job. I’m actually prepping my 28 BHM right now to paint the hull. It’s getting an Awlgrip primer then painted with AwlCraft 2000. Hull has seen its share of scratches & dings from the last 10 years I’ve have it & im getting ready to put the boat up for sale. If I were going to keep the boat I would spray it with new gelcoat with Duratec clear. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
