Best Westerns

Just watched the end of Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood. holy crap. I forgot what a badazz movie that is. Ruthless

I love how they portray the characters. Some claim they're hard, others know they're hard, and then there's William Munny. Gene Hackman is awesome. The scene where the kid finally realizes who Eastwood is and what he's done, just great acting. Probably my favorite western of all time.

Whats everyone's go to western?

Slipknot 03-14-2014 07:41 AM

that is a great one but my Favorite is the Good,The Bad and the Ugly
It's a classic and full of classic Clint lines, and who doesn't love Tuco.
The music is my ringtone

The Big Country (Gregory Peck, Burl Ives)

Silverado (Kevin Costner among others)

Gunfight at the OK Corral (Lancaster/Douglas)

High Noon (Gary Cooper)

Yes I have seen shogun assassin! it was also inspired a ton of comics. My brother was a huge comic book geek, he bought me Lone wolf and cub graphic novels when I was younger.

Open Range-
Costner and Duvall, best and most realistic gunfire ever.

I love it when the Doctor tells DOC Holiday that he'll have to refrain from having any more sex because he's about to die soon

and Doc Holiday (played by Val Kilmer) says

"I believe it's time we re-define the Nature of our association........"

- huckleberry 2 :)

I know it's not associated with the movies, but the original "Lone Ranger" movie, where it explains why he became the man and why he wears the mask. It's not the squeaky clean version (TV) where nobody gets killed on camera, it's got some guts. I saw it on tv the week before they released the remake movie, and I kept thinking "Man, there's a lot of guys getting killed for a 'Lone Ranger' movie?"

The movies listed here already a great. Great shot locations, great actors and strong story lines.

Here's another goodie: "The Bend in the River" Jimmy Stewart, I believe.

I was trying to remember the name of that movie Dave (though I have seen it 20 times) I could not remember it off the top of my head! I put that on my list! Great movie!!!

MikeD 03-21-2014 10:36 AM

I love Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Watched that one with my Dad a millions times. I'm pretty sure that and Jaws are the only movies he's ever watched. "I can't swim. What are you crazy, the fall will probably kill ya!"

detbuch 03-21-2014 10:38 PM

Big Sky was really good. And, though it was a TV mini-series, I really really liked Lonesome Dove with David Duvall.

If those are the only 2 movies he's ever seen, he's doing OK!

The Searchers (someon eelse mentioned)
The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
Silverado (hate Costner, but I thought it was a fun movie)
Magnificent 7
Unforgiven
Butch Cassidy
True Grit (original)
Blazing Saddles (different kind of western)
Treasure Of the Sierra Madre
High Noon
High Plains Drifter
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Pale Rider

Butch: Would you make a jump like that, if you didn't have to?
Sundance: I have to, and I'm not doin' it.

Larry, how about when Duval shot thru the wall with his shotgun and knocked
the guy outside thru the air into the next building. :) I think there was more intensive gunfire in that scene than most except for maybe Josey Wales.

Rockfish9 05-12-2015 11:31 AM

Add the man from Snowy river... that was as good as a "B" movie gets... kirk Douglas as great in that one..

Raven 05-12-2015 12:30 PM

i second snowy river .... a bit of a feel good movie granted
but the ol gold miner kirk Douglas character was his best imho.
