Genuine Yamaha vs aftermarket

What has been your experience with using aftermarket parts for yamaha outboards?.... I need to replace my trim/tilt relay switch.....online price for genuine yamaha replacement part averaged around $190!!....compared with aftermarket price for around $50?
That's a pretty big difference...your thoughts?

beamie 01-01-2021 11:59 AM

No experience with that but my thought would be go aftermarket

It’s not a critical part compared to say a control module

And your nice custom boat is not that old. The original part didn’t last long. What’s to lose.

Thanks...that's what i was thinking ...it not being critical.
The outboard is a 2004.... bought it used. Runs great...but the tilt has been finicky....had to lower it with the relief screw to often.

I had a 2003 Yami 115 4 stroke. I replaced my relay with aftermarket. Don't know where it came from as my marina manager got it for me. $50 sounds about what I paid.

Agree with after market. I also have my tilt motor on order to be replaced in March. Price of OEM would pay for three aftermarket replacements including labor according to my mechanic. Any part of the tilt has to be considered sacrificial, IMO.

Rmarsh 01-01-2021 03:10 PM

Thanks guys......I will order the aftermarket relay. I bought yamaha binnicle and key switch when i originally rigged the motor....... the price was ridiculous.

beamie 01-03-2021 11:42 AM

And if not doing it yourself. If you had a boatyard do it. Often they use aftermarket but the bill will reflect oem. And most people will never know.

Got the aftermarket relay for around 40 bucks.......going to do the install this weekend. Not a lot of room in there for all the wires and my big clumsy fingers. I was looking at how to not drop screws or nuts and washers down and into an spot i wouldnt be able to retrieve them....and found a screw that someone else dropped down there....got it out with a small magnet on a stick.

Rmarsh 02-06-2021 08:55 AM

Put the new relay in this morning and......trim motor raises outboard but wont lower...same problem as before with the old relay. Then I tried reversing the blue and green wires to the trim motor and outboard goes down but not up..??? I thought that meant bad relay?
Trim motor runs good just not in both directions?
I'll probably have a pro look at it next.

beamie 02-06-2021 09:28 AM

Not an outboard guy but when the trim motor ran up and then down was this the same direction on the switch. Is the switch bad in one direction the lower

Call Steve Gunther. he's on your side of the Bay and a certified yami mechanic. Awesome guy did a ton of work on my Yami 115. He's mobile so he will come to you.

Thanks Wayne....yeah ive watched just about all the youtube videos
on tilt trim issues.....still cant find the problem.....motor works in both directions when hot wired. Changed out the relay....no good...unless they sent a dud but i doubt it could be that. Just ordered a new switch for the one on the ob.....but the trim switch at the helm behaves the same....up...not down.

Placed a call to the pro that Piemma suggested...just waiting to hear back. Thanks Paul

Steve will call you. Mention my name. He'll remember me. As I recall he literally did open heart surgery on my 115. VST filter, clogged injectors and a bunch of other stuff.

Linesider82 02-09-2021 11:59 AM

^^^do that, I hate dropping names but for boats it has to be done.

I had a pro come look at my tilt and trim problem.... he said it was a bad relay.....he was aware that I had just replaced it with an aftermarket one myself and that I didnt know what to do next. He seemed very sure so I paid him for his time....then went this morning to my local marine supplier and picked up a genuine Yamaha relay....popped it in and
problem solved!

But Bob, ....sometimes, that IS the difference, going OEM....
Just glad to hear the problem's fixed, be sure to return the after-market relay before you have to eat it...

Rmarsh 02-17-2021 12:13 PM

Printed out the return label and sending it back.
At least I learned how to swap out a relay in just a few minutes.....getting to know more about my outboard is a good thing 👌
Diagnosed the problem correctly.....just got sent a dud.

Thanks Wayne...I suppose I could have tried exchanging the aftermarket for another.
I cant say I wont try aftermarket again...but i'm leery.
Im not trusting of anything coming out of china.
Just bought a battery charger....yup...made in china.....I dont trust it enough to leave it plugged in unattended....might just burn down my shop and the boat.

I can understand the China sentiment but keep in mind that your flat screen TV's, Cellphone and computer you are using right now most likely have electronic PCB from China.
