2018 MV Derby
 

David Kaerson made it though with his big alligator bluefish. I would love to see him take home the truck. He's the hardest boat fisherman I've ever met and deserves to take it down.

Any cool anecdotes from the derby this year? Anyone make a lifetime memmory?
Have fun at the awards if anyone is going.

Spent 4 weeks fishing , tuff albie year for sure. Did see some of the smallest Albies ever.
Did I say Chappy was dead ? Never seen it so slow.
Bass from shore were ok but much smaller fish. But lots of them ! Nothing over 37 inches. And lots of cookie cutters. All fish were released
Best memory was from a derby winner I ran into on the beach from 1975. I could have talked with him for hours !

Wow, a winner from 43 years ago. Back then just bass and blues and they were both bigger than today's fish. I'll bet there were a lot of good stories.

If anyone hears who's wn please let us know. Must be close to if not over by now.

Paul Hoffman and David Kadison won the boat and truck respectively. Both bluefish winners.

My son Anthony took the Junior Shore Bonito, won the Cutler award for a new bicycle and a raffle for a round of golf for 4 at Mink Meadows. Solid day for the Hern family.

I deliberately do not participate in this Derby; although, I still own a fishing shack over there, garage a beach buggy, and know a gate owner or two for some privileged access.

When the Derby records some daily Shore Striped Bass weights of 10-12 pounds (especially in the daily 3rd and 4th place slots), it is time for the Derby Committee to seriously consider making a conservation and mind set statement with rule changes regarding this pressured species.

For an example: Derby striped bass deserve Not to be killed in hopes of winning a "mystery prize". Daily striped bass slots should be limited to recognition and "prizes" for daily 1st and 2nd place slots only. Indeed, on some days, the 3rd and 4th place slots did not even fill. Better yet, parents should be showing by example, and teaching their kids that MV striper fishing has sunk to new lows.

good thoughts. all the bass tournaments need to reconsider the catch 'n kill rules in their contests. its time to stop taking bass out of the ecosystem unnecessarily

What did the derby do when the bass swooned in the 1980s? I know the RI Striper Tournament dropped them as a species for a few seasons. Became bluefish only.

I am thinking dailies and weeklies should be catch and release with a photo. Raise the weight in limits to something that would be in contention for the grand prizes only. Something in that line of thinking anyways.

I go, buy two badges to contribute to the scholarships, and put all the fish back in the water. It has become more about people than fish the last few years as well. People you know and people you meet.

Derby dropped the bass as well for several years.

Very,very few bass are wasted as most are filleted and donated or eaten by the fisherman/woman. All state limits are stickly adhered to and are sometimes even more strict for the derby. I've presonally watched so many youngsters lift their fish up to the counter and hand it to Charlie. It's not about the shot at a mystery prize for them.

I don't believe the numbers caught and eaten during the derby make any signifcant impact to the fishery and if anything teach youngersters about limits and why they exist. Even when stripers were pulled from the derby in the 80's it was more in a show of support for the fishery but likely made little to no impact on it's revival imho.

The seals make a far greater negative impact on the striper population as well as to bring in the Great Whites that put our bathers at risk. Thinning the seal population in a humane way should be considered frommultiple perpspectives.

I think the Derby can tweak the rules and find ways to reduce pressure on the bass .
