I need to lay a #^&#^&#^&#^& ton this weekend and need to know what to do to prep, and anything pertinent, have at it.... :love: :rotf2:

What ever you do "Don't'' unroll it and go fishin.

In all seriousness just loosen the soil in the area in which your laying it down. A little fertilizer on the bare soil helps as well and make sure all your seems are right. Staggering patterns work best and knit in faster. On any edge where the sod line stops make sure soil is raked up flush to the edges or the first dry day you'll burn out all the edges. Water water and more water until the sod is rooted enough you can't pull it out with a little tug. Make sure the sod you get isn't all dried out before you lay it out. I've seen sod come off trucks that was cut the day before rolled up and then wind blown from travel.

Turf guy - good info. Do you know an est cost for a pallet of turf and approx. how many square feet it would cover?

What kind of sod and where it comes from are the two major factors dependent on cost.

Bluegrass sod picked up in ct (not sure i can mention names) is roughly .30$/sq ft. And that's for 500-100 sq ft. It jumps up to almost .50$/sq ft delivered. The more u buy the less it is 500 sq ft on a pallet

I am getting my sod from a place in Middleborough. 39 a square foot there are 540 square feet on their pallets i am getting 2 pallets

Higgie thanks for the info. Should i use regular or starter fertilizer? I was told by someone else to soak the area the day before with water so the ground is moist but not muddy. What do you think?

I don't think it matters one way or the other but it don't hurt. Your gonna be watering the sod enough the first two weeks the ground will saturate

Use a starter fert as well rake it into your soil. Use an old steak knife for trimming edges serrated knives work best

...02.....First 5-6 or so cuts should be done with a lite push mower (20''). If you use starter, rather use less then more. Lay sod like bricks.

One more question if I get sod on saturday and it rains saturday and sunday, will the sod keep until monday?

Are you asking if it holds rolled up stacked on a pallet?? I'd lay it in the rain. Two pallets will lay out in about an hour. Perfect weekend for sodding if you ask me. Cool and wet. I personally would unroll it

Nice, Bill. I happened on a pallet of sod for free this morning.... Here in town. Saw it on CL. All laid out here too! Didn't do much prep... Waiting for more rain. Was generating some heat in the middle of those rolls!

Here is my project. I didn't do the whole yard only the area from the pool to the house.

I have been watering the crap out of it. In a couple of spots where I had divots I pulled up the sod and got some more loom under it, then packed it down, I noticed the roots starting to grow down on those pieces.

Looks great!! Yup those fresh white roots are exactly what you want to see.

Thanks, it actually looks even better after all of this rain, and it had it's second cut sunday and it ready to be cut again..

Building a new deck , laying down sod...Bill is a busy guy these days! :)

It's good for the brain and the body. Would rather be fishing though

This past weekend I dropped another 550 Sq feet of sod down on the area behind my garage and pool, this time had no help and did it all by myself.
