82 lber @ Montauk

That is the buzz...don't know all the details but everyone is talking about it here! Imagine a fish 32lbs heavier then a 50!

beachwalker 10-09-2003 11:37 AM

uh........

redlite 10-09-2003 11:46 AM

Depending on the truth and how it was caught, that means a new world record...........

Slipknot 10-09-2003 12:00 PM

BUzz from where?

JohnR 10-09-2003 12:02 PM

What Slip Said :eek5: :eek5: :eek5: :eek5:

Course that still means my numerous dreams of 84 #s from the beach will still be a world record holder :hihi:

Mr. Sandman 10-09-2003 12:02 PM

Several guys out here fishing the derby mentioned it to me this morning and then I walked into the shop here and the first thing I heard was..."did you hear about the 82 at Montauk?"

I don't know ANY details but I heard this from 3 independent sources.

winchmaster 10-09-2003 12:10 PM

 We shall see.

redlite 10-09-2003 12:13 PM

I just blasted through the other sights out there and I couldn't find any mention of it, even from the daily Montauk report. Need info badly. It may be true. I already double checked my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st, but it is a full moon.

Mr. Sandman 10-09-2003 12:19 PM

I did the same prior to posting, found nothing.....so at this point it is hear-say but I figured I would pass along exactly what I heard.

I am going to make a couple phone calls to a couple buds at Montauk...probably will not hear from them until tonight.

There is someone on this board that lives out that way...Patchouge or Bayville area I think...maybe he knows.

Tattoo 10-09-2003 12:20 PM

....just called Freddy's in Montauk. They know nothing about it.

Mr. Sandman 10-09-2003 12:37 PM

Well they certainly should know. Perhaps its BS. I certainly did not make it up.

addict 10-09-2003 01:07 PM

The only thing Vinny knows at Freddie's is how to make coffee. :laughs:

MakoMike 10-09-2003 01:10 PM

I just talked to TJ at Gone Fishing, we were talking about something else, but I'm sure he would have mentioned it if he knew anything.

Mr. Sandman 10-09-2003 01:15 PM

OK...sounds like BS. Sorry if I mis-lead anyone...John, feel free to delete this thread.

UserRemoved1 10-09-2003 01:16 PM

Sandman ya pm's are full

I said this:

I will prob be out there tomorrow, YELLOW boat with t top can't miss :)

chris L 10-09-2003 01:22 PM

true or not thats going to be a busy place this week .

Fish_Eye 10-09-2003 02:45 PM

They must have been talking about the 82 pound fish YOU'RE going to catch on Saturday with the Laptew Production camera crew.

Mike P 10-09-2003 03:10 PM

I haven't heard a breath about it. Someone also posted on Stripersurf asking about it, saying he read about it on "another website". Probably here.

If it was true it would have hit Noreast.com first I think.

Freddie's would have heard about it---if I was the one who caught it, it would have hit the first scale west of the Point---and that would likely be Freddie's :D Johnny's would have probably yelled at the guy for getting bass slime on his floor

Mr. Sandman 10-09-2003 03:23 PM

Made a few calls myself....No one has heard about this...highly doubtful.

Mike P 10-09-2003 03:47 PM

BTW---this isn't the first "new world record at Montauk" rumor that ever got started at the Vineyard. Sometime around 1996 or 1997, the word was spreading towards the end of the Derby ;) I called home and no one heard squat.

Jenn 10-09-2003 05:06 PM

here is a thought for you.....

lets just pretend for a minute that it IS true.....youre all saying "such and such knows nothing about it, so its sounds like bs"

what if I slid an 82 bass on the beach (yeah right) but decided not to have it weighed .......who would ever know?????my friends & family maybe.....and it might slip out to others. Then the entire internet fishing community would be gossiping just like this and say "wow....what a crock of s$#T!!!!!!"

I stopped believing fish stories a long time ago myself......so its just a thought....

;)

MikeTLive 10-09-2003 05:40 PM

Y'know, if I were to catch a fish over 20 lbs I would most likely let it go back on the pond it came from.

They are the parents for the next generations.

There must be a way to get an official weight and still practice C&R with the big monsters.

RIJIMMY 10-09-2003 06:06 PM

Jenn, its like the ole tree falling in the woods but no one hears it ...
if you catch the world record bass and don't tell anyone.....you did not catch the world record bass

Karl F 10-09-2003 08:07 PM

If it's true, I hope it was some guy from Mass. and I hope he got it on a #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& lure! ;)

Tagger 10-09-2003 08:14 PM

or Tagger .." Big Dave".....yea ..!!

you're right.

My older brother's father in law is from Maryland originally and told me of a bass that his dad caught when he was a kid that was easily 100 lbs. and they ate it. With a family that had 11 kids they only thought of it as food.
Of course it's just a fish story right Jenn? ;) I wasn't there so I can't believe it.

likwid 10-09-2003 08:33 PM

MikeT: photo with measurements.
Thats how they sometimes do C&R fish.

Mike P 10-09-2003 09:01 PM

You can get a record accepted for a released fish. You can submit a Manley, Chatillion or Boga-Grip scale to the IGFA and they'll check it for accuracy. If it's within a pound of true weight, they'll certify it for record submission for one year. Like likwd said, you also have to submit photos and measurements along with the weight, and it has to be witnessed.

You have to weigh a fish while your feet are planted on land or a dock---you can't weigh the fish while aboard a boat. The land doesn't necessarily have to be dry but your two feet have to be on it.
