Are They Runnin'???

Can anyone tell me exactly what the hell this phrase is supposed to mean? I know in general what it means, but it baffles me that the only people who use this term are people who don't fish!!! I was jigging for smelt with my kids and some woman asked me what I was fishing for and she immediately shot back with, "oh...are they running". I felt like saying "no they are swimming" or "no, but I just feel like sitting here with a fishing rod for no good reason". Stripers..."are they runnin'?", Bluefish..."are they runnin'?", is anyone else sick of this phrase or I am I just a little too sensitive?:lossinit:  To me wouldn't the fish be running either when they arrive or when they leave? Yet I hear this all the time, and when you boil it all down, exactly what response do these people expect to hear to this question?:wall: :wall: :wall:

That term makes more sence when its refered to bait, like pogies or mackeral herring ect. Proably gets tossed around alot as slang fish talk....lol Just say, yeah they're running and believe or not I seen one walkin too.

10 PM Sat night at the Ditch, I'm getting my rods down from the roof and loading the stuff onto the bike, some guy comes up to me and asks, "Gonna do some fishin'?"

"Yeah, I figger it's too hot for golf" :rollem:

Like Goose said, I think the term "running" was always used with "schooling" fish on the move, normally baitfish or consumable bait-fish that normally "run" in schools for either migratory reasons or to spawn. For example; ...the Fall "run", the herring "run", fish on the move for one reason or another ......either that ....OR... A couple of red-neck fishermen were watching the "Boston Marathon" on T.V. ...a loooooooong time ago and while watching one said to the other...

"Hey Earl.....lookeee there...thems all look like a bunch of fishes runnin' on those there streets...." :laughs: :laughs: :laughs:

..your best bet is to just be honest, whether your catching or not.........NO, they are not running. :)

..back to the solitude of you, your son, and the fish. :)

not bad, try this

Two guys from CT told me that I was fishing THERE beach on sunday....I smiled and went large with a 32lb'r the very next cast.

I said, "Your right this IS your beach." and dragged one off.

Doesn't "running" come from salmon? When the salmon go up the rivers to spawn is usually called the salmon run.
Just my 2 cents

IMO, its meant to refer to the Fall Run etc. when fish are heading up or down the coast in the respective season.
