lathe turning demonstrations
Just got this from Chris at Woodworkers Warehouse. Thought some of you might like to check out the lathe turning demonstrations
Fellow Woodworkers: I'm very excited about our November demonstration series. We've done in-store demonstrations practically since the New Bedford Woodworkers Warehouse opened 11 some-odd years ago. However, as far as I remember, these demonstrations were always conducted by our employees. Further, each one was a self-contained demo (cleaning your Paslode gun, dust collection seminar, tool tune-up demonstrations, just to name a few). So, this Saturday, November 1, 2003, marks a first for us in two ways: 1) This Saturday will be the first installment in a five-part series of lathe turning demonstrations. Each week's demonstration will focus on a different aspect of turning (the schedule of topics is outlined below). Rather than trying to stuff all this information into one 8 hour long demo, we'll be breaking it up into logical sections -- each about 3-4 hours long. We feel this format will allow us to bring you more information and not have to gloss over something you may find interesting or important. 2) The employees of the store will not be running these demonstrations this time. Instead, we are pleased and honored to have Steve Straffin, a real up and coming area turner, joining us to conduct this series. Steve is best known as a cabinet maker who does some really beautiful custom built furniture. However, in a former life Steve was a potter. This helps explain where he comes up with some of his ideas -- he has an artist's eye and is very good at turning his vision into real, functional pieces. As I said, each week Steve will focus on a different topic. Week One (November 1, 2003) will center on pen turning; Week Two (November 8) will cover "T-Lights" (small votive candle holders); Week Three (November 15) concentrates on bowl turning; and in Week Four (November 22) Steve will demonstrate spindle turning. And in Week Five (November 29) Steve has a few surprises up his sleeve (this week's going to be really fun!). So, you can see why I'm so excited about this series. It should prove to be very informative and interesting, but, above all, I think you'll find it very entertaining (Steve has a very wry sense of humor and he's not shy about sharing his thoughts). The hours for these demos will be from 10am to approximately 2pm each Saturday. We will also have free drawings, raffles, and free refreshments, so please join us. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call me at (508) 995-2222, or e-mail me at cjp4480@netscape.net. We look forward to seeing you, and thank you for your continued patronage. Chris Sales Manager Woodworkers Warehouse 500 Kings Highway New Bedford, MA 02745 |
