Finishing Question
Got a question for you famous guyz from OTW :D
Turned a batch of plugs last year (my first) overall.. shape came out ok, but my finish wasnt as smooth as I would have liked... What do you guys use to sand them down, I was using paper while it was still spinning.. maybe too heavy of a grit etc.. looking for some ideas, I start turning after turkey day.... 'hound aka Bryan |
I also sand them on the lathe. 80 grit to start, then finish with 150 grit. After I drill eye/weight/hook holes, I'll hand sand again with the 150 grit. Hit with primer. Lightly sand with 150 grit when the primer is dry.

In many cases the grain raises slightly after you prime, so scuffing them by hand with 150 grit or so will give you a smoother finish.
Now to produce some decent looking plugs myself :hidin: |
You better Hide, I want Your plugs to..............
I use 80 and jump up to 100 or 120 make sure Your tools are sharp = less sanding |
Dave.. mine still suck.. but maybe we can work something out.. wont be fore afew months.. I'm still fishin!

go catchem up and if they get You fish they dont suck .
You can have a pretty paint job but if it doesnt wiggle it is not worth the time. it took me a fall and a year to get my danny to where i like it. along with some other lures plus the protos I have hanging. its part of the hobby, self gratification. |
I'll try and post some pics of last years stuff next week (my dig camera is on loan this week) I should have new stuff by xmas...
|
what kind of Lures am I hoing, err I meen are You making??
|
Mostly needles and a needle/spook combo thing... tried some swimmers (atom style and failed)
This year my goal is some pencils and better spook design.. B |
if you want an unreal smooth wood do this-
get some elmers wood filler and wipe it around the plug fillin all the little divits, etc. let dry. sand smooth, then seal, comes out perfect. you cant even tell its wood after painting. i like to prime twice and sand the primer after 2nd coat, if i like it then i paint. hope this helps. |
You have to have "Tooth" to hold your finishes on..I sand on lathe with100 ...Thats it !!!! If you want a plug so smooth ? hold a glass jar on plug while spinning..(baseball bat trick)...its no good to have it that smooth .finish won't adhere as good ...trust me ...thats one of my many screw ups ...
