Who Here Likes To Ice Fish???

Do any of you folks ice fish??? Might be a nice group outing later in the season! Not so much about the fish as just getting together and having a cookout on some ice someplace and maybe catch a few? The only thing I hate about ice fishing, other than the cold, the heavy clothing, and in general all the trouble you have to go through just to do it is that it is so difficult to work the pencil poppers just right????:laugha: :hihi: :jump:

Van 11-07-2003 08:00 PM

I'm in !!!!!!!!!!!

:D :D :D

I see you changed your avitar back !!!:D

fishaholic18 11-07-2003 08:03 PM

I've never tried it, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Do you have to get heavily intoxicated to stand the cold?:D

fishsmith 11-07-2003 08:04 PM

Sure I like drinking.

Canalratt1 11-07-2003 08:08 PM

Oh yah can't wait!

Katie 11-07-2003 08:11 PM

fishing in the winter?

sounds fun.. i'd give it a shot.

fishaholic18 11-07-2003 08:18 PM

Has anyone tried ice fishing from a boat????:smash: :smash:

BigFish 11-07-2003 09:42 PM

Fishaholic....basically the same logistical problem ice fishing from a boat and trying to properly work a pencil popper.....we need MOVING water!!!!:smash: :smash:

BigFish 11-07-2003 09:43 PM

Oh...yes Van, changed back the avatar! I don't want you getting confused!:laugha:

chris L 11-08-2003 06:46 AM

ive been known to jig a pond under ice in a couple states ( sober ,intoxicated ,medicated and foolishly) .

Notaro 11-08-2003 08:25 AM

BigFish, don't you mean by smeltfishing? I saw some markets sell them now. Those jacks are bigger than a long rod, u know? Anyway, I am in. I got the gear for it.

BigBo 11-08-2003 08:30 AM

Notaro, BigFish is talking about fishing on frozen lakes with jigging rods and tip-ups.
Oh, and yes, I go all the time. Ask macojoe, I think he's a big fan of ice fishing.:laughs: (I asked him to go with me this winter and he said he doesn't go anywhere near ice):wavey:

BigFish 11-08-2003 08:32 AM

No Notaro....not smelt fishing, that would be saltwater ice fishing> I am talking freshwater, on a pond or lake, for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, pickeral, pike, crappie, muskie, trout, salmon, etc. When we get fishable ice, I will put a group trip together. I promise it will be a good time and you will enjoy it.:uhuh: :kewl:

BigFish 11-08-2003 08:35 AM

BigBo...well see if we can get MacoJoe to go!!! He sounds like a good guy that at least might enjoy some burgers and dogs, and maybe an ice cold beer. (ice cold without a cooler...just sittin' in a pile of snow, with the biggest koozie on earth...the lake itself).

Got Stripers 11-08-2003 08:41 AM

I've been known to use my boat to break ice to fish:), but I'm not a big fan of standing on frozen water to pull fish from a small hole. I saw too much ice last winter, which keep me from my striped friends for almost a month, I personally and hoping for a nice mild winter without any ice.

BigFish 11-08-2003 08:53 AM

NO ICE!!!!! Then we can all spend a cold day casting for trout...the point is to help each other get through the miseralbe, striperless winter.:wiggle: :rotf3:

BigFish 11-08-2003 08:55 AM

Did not mean to type miserALBE! All you Albe fans...take it easy!:laugha:

tlapinski 11-08-2003 09:29 AM

define "like". i used to ice fish, but it was really only to break up the boredome of winter. now that i wrap rods, tie teasers/flies/tails, and other off season surf prep stuff, i just can't find the time.

BigFish 11-08-2003 10:14 AM

Exactly...do you think I "like" standing outside on a frozen foundation in 10 degree weather and a 25 miler blowin' the wind chill to 20 below???? I only go for the same reason! It breaks up the winter and gets me out for some fresh air, which, on a good sunny day is great! Do all that with the right people, and the best finger foods you can muster up???? Sounds like it is worth the trip! Stay tuned T-Lap....I know it sounds at least a little better to you now, doesn't it???? :gu: :gu:

Van 11-08-2003 03:06 PM

There are some pretty good local ponds for pickerel bass perch.

Flatts1 (aka Mike F) is a BIG (haha) iceman.

He invited me last year but i could not make it at those times.

Sounds like a good idea.

BigFish 11-08-2003 03:09 PM

Van...would you and Tom and the Boy Wonder like to join in when I put this together???

Christian 11-08-2003 03:55 PM

ice fishing is fun. im in. buckmasters

BigBo 11-08-2003 04:08 PM

I've got a friend that lives at the edge of a private lake. He's got a huge stone fireplace that we get roaring. He's cooking food all day long on the thing and we get the tip-ups set up right out in front. Last year, my big bass was an 8 lber. It's really a good time.

BigBo 11-09-2003 06:37 AM

Is that your tip-up or are you just glad to see me?:bl2:

Swede 11-09-2003 06:40 AM

I think I can speak for Striper1 and say we are in! We have a gas auger

BigFish 11-09-2003 08:51 AM

"Mind if I jig your hole with my stick?"
I think we will have to leave FishWeeWee home that day???:hidin: :laugha: MacoJoe...long about the time we have fishable ice, my winter weight should put me at a cheeseburger shy of 300 pounds!!! You and I can just remain a few feet apart as we do not want to go crashing through the ice!!!:laugha:
