small stripers in South County
Took the dog and my 8.5 foot spinning rod for a drive yesterday (Sunday) morning. Got To Watch Hill at about 10:00, took the long walk out to Napatree point and back. Saw a few breaking fish, sometimes within casting distance, but I couldn't hook up.
After a quick beer and fish & chips at the Andrea, I was walking the dog on the beach near Misquamicut, when I saw a bunch of cars on the beach, about halfway back to Watch Hill Light. I broke out the binoculars, and I could see a bunch of breaking fish and crashing birds, just in front of the lucky stiffs who were already there. I drove down there and there was an intense feeding frenzy going on. It was pretty crowded, so I did more looking than fishing, but the fish were small stripers, maybe 5 pounds. Guys were hooking up on small surface poppers, and small Kastmaster-type tins. All in all, a very worthwhile trip. |
They were out there on Friday night as well. Well, around there. The bigger ones are coming in this weekend.

Ed -
I have a silver Pathfinder with a ski rack on the roof which holds my rods. We also had a golden retriever and a springer spaniel running around with us, if you happened to catch that. This weekend looks to be a LOT warmer, so I'm planning on heading down again. |
