I have been working on a "secret project" for the last few months but like the development of the atomic bomb I am still a year or so from sending it to someone to review and see if it merits printing. A plug history is included as well as a section of the history of the sport on the Cape and Islands as well. In the spring I hope to start the data/interview process with a number of folks, got over a hundred pages done now and I just started. This is gonna take a while.:read:

Flaptail 11-12-2003 10:03 PM

Mine isn't just about plugs. It's about Striper fishing now and way back when on good ol'Cape Cod.

chumbucket 11-12-2003 10:04 PM

I'll buy a few copies...autographed of course:D

Flaptail 11-12-2003 10:05 PM

BTW, Ed Poore of Sagamore should do it. He has been talking about it for years. He has the best collection of anyone I know. All vintage Striper plugs.

justplugit 11-13-2003 12:24 PM

FLAP, sounds great and a book like that will sell like crazy.

saltwater book's

I know of 3 people who are now printing books on saltwater plugs.

The first one is a paperback book that should be out in a year.
This book is more of a collection of pic's with names of makers and models. I talked with him last week at the show and he said he had about 90 pages done, but he has found a new job so things will slow down for a while.

The 2nd book will be a hard cover with 2 of the largest collections and rare lures known to man kind :) From the Eastcoast.
Not only will it have pic's of colors and models /boxes but also the history behind the company and catalogs and full documation on the lures. This will be the book to buy !!
aS for when will it be in the book store's ??? I wish I could tell you, I have been asking for a while, I hope it's out in the next year or so.

Hey Flaptail

Any place in your book for some info. about what fish are a bit offshore in what seasons like one of your OTW articles when you referred to such matters from your youth experiences working on boats?

Flaptail 11-19-2003 07:19 AM

Yep. BTW the tentative title of the book when it gets done is "Chasing Fifty", Subtitle :"Striper Fishing on Cape Cod, Then and Now" it has a couple conotations.

justplugit 11-23-2003 11:48 PM

OK---- here is a layman's attempt to give some plug history to hold us till "THE BOOKS" are published, hopefully soon.

Evidently the first lures used in acient times were made of reeds , feathers and cloth. I remember seeing a lure made out of reeds with wood hooks in some book, think NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, some time ago.

justplugit 11-24-2003 12:07 AM

Acording to Nick Karas in Striped Bass Fishing, Quote" It's difficult to determine just when the first artificial lures were introduced to salt water. Though "flies" made of cloth and feathers had been used to lure trout and grayling to the hook in acient Salonika and later, even before the Romans came to Britian to catch salmon, ther application to salt water and other species of fish was extremely tardy.Actually, the general use of plugs, spoons, and other lures in salt water,or even fresh water, had to wait for the development of rods, lines and especially reels."

Hope this is useful and will post more when i get some more info.

Hop in if you have anything else to add.
