It's in pawtucket
the Greenlaand Mill went up and the wind pushed the fire over three blocks

Lets have a prayer for the FIre-Fighters it's cold and hard on them.

JohnR 11-14-2003 06:55 PM

The wind is just driving the flames down the blocks... http://images.ibsys.com/2003/1114/2639030_200X150.jpg

Five Houses Confirmed Burning
Got the scanners on
NO FIREFIGHTERS INJURED thank god
All Fire COmpanies present and accounted for as of 1700
They have at least 6 different mutaul aid Cities
and over 20 Mutual aid companies
THe fire was General alarm as of 1500
All companies have directed the efforts away from the mill that is now collapsed they are focusing onthe homes and stoipping the embers from spreading

Those old mill buildings always go up quick and big. The problem is after 50 60 or more years the wooden floor soak up so much oil and other flammible solvents they just go quick. Up here in Holyoke there were 2 mill fires that I remember watching from 4 or 5 blocks away and man did those firemen have a tough time with them. I dont envy those guys with that wind! i hope nobody gets hurt.

stripercrazy 11-14-2003 09:40 PM

I'm about 2 miles away

seen the smoke from work and the house. pawt's a working class kinda town with a great fire dept. I used to drink with alot of them. hope there all ok. when the chips are down you can always count on the firemen. my dad was a east prov fireman for 32 years.

Sounds like that old mill complex where Cottage St and Central Ave cross.

It's close enough, but not too close. 'Bout a mile. They should be OK.

Hey Island Angler
Being one of those guys WE DONT LIVE FOR PEOPLE's homes being burned to the ground and putting our comrades in danger fire is the enemy and although I live fot the adreniline rush and wait for a little action I wouldn't wish anyone's home being burned to the ground and abonded mill is one thing but hard working people's houses no way man thank god no one died like the last RI fire.

Yeah.. that thing was not to far from my house. The day after, you could still smell charred wood and lord knows what else. I feel terrible for the families that lost everything.

JohnR 11-16-2003 10:34 AM

I read in the paper this morning that 16 firefighters were injured with two still remaining in the hospital as of last night. 17 Homes damaged or destroyed...

Mike P 11-16-2003 09:50 PM

My sister finally returned my call this afternoon---the fire was closer than I thought---right near the old Cottage St School. She lives two blocks east of Newport Ave and they evacuated everyone west of there. They were packed and ready to go if the fire spread any farther. The cars and the back yard are covered in soot and sooty water drops---the wind carried water from the fire all the way to her yard.

I work in Pawtucket and I can tell you that the wind was really ripping up here on Friday. I could see the smoke from the fira and it was traveling just about horizontal to the ground. I heard that one house that burned was five blocks from the fire.
