Looking to get in the Art of Plug Building.
 

Hi,
I'm really thinking about getting into building my own plugs, I've done a few by hand and spray can.. mostly fat arse needles that don't work. But i've seen the work your people have done with your plugs and i am very impressed. I'm just wondering if you could tell me what i would need to get started as far as building the plug goes.. tools/hardware. a more or less how much will this cost.

Any advise/tips on the types of wood and finishing part(sealer, paint, # of coats, epoxy/finish) would be helpful. I have some airbrushes that were given to me by a friend who used to paint surf boards so i am pretty sure i have atleast that part covered.

found Jet mini lathe

and some 2-3k lathe's and duplicators and some posts on airbrushes and compressors.

there was post on tools but it was basic to the brand name sorbeys or something like that..

maybe i should have been more descriptive as like

is the jet mini for 199 any good? or do i need to spend 2k to make nice plugs?

What size tools should i go for? i've seen sizes from 1/16 to 4 inches?

... I'm a complete NOOB to this aspect of the game.. I used to build rods got out of that after i got robbed.. winter's here and i spent too much money on plugs this past year and would like to make my own....

DO NOT get into this to SAVE money, it's an addiction, and if you got a tight budget wait till you start buying wood,harware and all the other goodies that go with it :eek:.It never ends but it's a ball, you meet great people(with the same addiction) and there's nothing like getting a fish on home spun wood.you've just been warned,now order that Jet(it is a great deal):D johnny "the Ratt Boy"

The jet mini for 200 bux is a great lathe. They are now making a variable speed model for an additional 100.

Sorbys are excellent turning tools, get a 3/4" gouge and a 1" skew to start with. A parting tool comes in handy too.

As far as getting into plug making to save money...forget about it. You will spend 10 times the money making them as you would buying them. Trust me I know.
