Which Hooks...

What hooks do you all use for live-linning herring or macks?

Jaiem 05-07-2001 12:43 PM

I like Gamakstsu hooks. The Octopus hook is very sharp and strong yet relatively light wire. The Live Bait hook is a great hook too but heavier.

I like to use offset octopus for macks and offset circle hooks for live-linning herring, just my preference.

I've been using 6/0 or 7/0 live bait or Octopus but I just bought some more Friday and opted for 10/0 Gamma Octopus hooks.

eagle claw 4x bronze trebles...size 4 for herring and size 2 for pogies (when they were around).

Thanks ladies and gents... But you are all pretty much staying from 6/0 to 10/0, right?

Saltheart, speaking of hooks on Friday, did you hook-up on anything? I didn't have the heart to ask my wife to let me out as she has had a bad week too...

JettyJockey18 - do you run two of the trebbles through a herring? And if so, where? Thanks...

Damn - wrong Symbol - the thumb was supposed to point up....

Non-offset circle hooks ( the offset ones tend to gut hook which is a bad thing)

Sometimes I use the same 6/0 mustad short shanks that I use on eels.

I've only live-lined one mac before, they are hard to keep alive.

Jaiem 05-08-2001 07:33 AM

Macs are very tough to keep alive. They need mucho O2 and are also very sensetive to injury.

i run one of the treble hooks through the nostril and leave the other two out, seems to be effective. since its a thinner hook, just have to be careful when casting.
