Boat Togging...Help Me Out...
 

Hey guys, I got into a debate with a person about boat togging. He said that a 60 lbs mono is good for togging, but I disagree. Give me something I can argue with...

my bad, I meant to click others. I use 40 pound mono for tog fishing...

I use 80#test saltwater fusion.. it's cheap and doesn't stretch.. also it lasts a while.. i spool it on my reel and attach a snap swivel. I make my own tog rigs with 40 or 60# leader material(stiffer is better) for me anyways 2 loops and i put a crane swivel on the top end and a loop on the bottom for sinker.. if ya get stuck the rig breaks.

it's good for leader material, but not for main line on your conventional reel.

you should be using braid as your main line, tied off to a swivel. From the swivel run your dropper loop of mono.

some people think that fluorocarbon leader is better than plain mono.

I like your rig lepar BUT:rolleyes: putting both hooks on the bottom will increase your hook-up's, I use soft rope like string for a leader. Tangles are few and tog's aren't leader shy.

Alot of places i fish are very thick with structure. So for me the straighter the line the better chance i have of bringing up my catch. What i normally do is let the sinker hit bottom then drop my tip down about 6-10" and wait for the bang. Since i'm using a Spectra based main line all i need to do to set the hook is lift up and reel.. I also keep my hooks sharp.

50 to 80 # pound leader!! For hitting the rocks and pilings, and the teeth.

I currently use 50lb dacron, my father uses mono and outfishes me, and my grandfather used 80lb mono and had more big tog than I've ever seen.... tog arent leader shy, with either line, the rig is a hi/lo rig, all about 6-8" apart, 2 8/0 or 9/0 hooks (Gami octopuss or mustad) and a sinker 6-8oz on the bottom, nice and simple.. then use the biggest f'ing crabs you can find..... if they cant eat em you dont want em :D
besides I have had more 2lb tog on baits the size of your fist than I can count....

Pic was last year, somewhere around 14.5, my biggest so far, this years biggest are somewhere in the mid 10's for me and mid 11 for my father, but we're put till xmas or so depending on f'ing storms :smash:

thank you, guys. so i guess mono and braid are tied. but i would rather to use braid instead of mono. bite detection is vital for togging.
