Reel Advice
I am looking for advice to which reel I should buy. I have a 7500ss that I bought this fall and come to the realization that it is too heavy for plugging. I have a 9 ft medium action rod to go with it and was trying to decide between a 706z, a Slammer, or a Shimano Baitrunner also open to other suggestions. I usually fish plugs between 1 to 2-1/2 ozs and also need a reel that can be dunked as I often fish up to my waist in the surf.

go with the slammer I think it would be a good bet for Your rod:)
just keep it oil'd up . |
how about a 704Z???

I think the middle size Shimru Baitrunner would be good.
Anyway , even a 5500SS would probably be big enough. How much line caoacity you really need? |
Yeah, but if your throwing plugs dont you want a bail?
I'm just madly in love with my 704. The thing is a tank. |
Eben- No bail doesn't bother me I took the bail off of my 75000ss.
Saltheart- I think I need something with at least 200 yards of 20lbs capacity. I fish at the breachways sometimes and let out quite a bit of line. By the way if anyone is interested in the 7500ss let me know. It is pretty much brand new bought it this November. |
no bail--water proof-- you can fish it in water up to your top lip--the vanstall 200--250 and 300 all will hold at least 200yds of 20 the 300 just has a slower retrieve. But the price is in the twilight zone.

I put the 560 Slammer on a 9' rod this fall, and would do it again. Go with 20# Fireline, sounds like it would be a good fit for the rod

6500 Nautil??
There have been alot of them roaming around at well below what they originally sold for. If I remember correctly I think I paid $80 for the one I ended up selling Slip and that was brand new in box. Have used mine 2 yrs without a hitch! Russ |
If you must have the baitrunner system on a spinning reel you may want to try an Okuma EB-30. Yeah, I know they are from the Far East but so is the computer you're using right now. I bought one late last season and it's pretty smooth. Not sure what it will be like in a year or two but they are pretty inexpensive....
