Wooden Swimmers
 

What wooden swimmers, like the Danny, do you use and how can you modify them. I'm having difficulty keeping that plug up on the surface and the eye is not ideal to bend around. I'm curious what other swimmers (ie Lex), preferably wood, that you use and how you modify them. I'm looking for new wooden swimmers to try out...

I've seen some the surface action of another old Dani swimmer that was much different than the Gibbs I was using. I want to compare some, so I even got a couple current Gibb's Dannys to side by side test.... (and to put skins on this year ;D )

I like the Lex Fatboy in 1 & 2oz. It has a very nice wobble and stays up on the surface. He also makes another plug with a sloped head that stays on the surface as well (I don't know what he calls it), but I think the Fatboy wobbles the best. As you know they are made of wood and I don't do anything to modify it, I think it works just fine as is.

Like the man said the Lex Fatboy works well.. You can also tune it to stay on top better by bending the metal lip down a little.. Play around with the lip to get your desired swim pattern.. My personal favorite is an old plug called the Goo Goo Eyes swimmer..It came in a 6" and 8" model.. They can be a little hard to find.. but are well worth the effort.. I have managed to pick up twenty five or so over the years, and buy everyone I can get my hands on.. Ebay is a good place to look.. So tune those plugs a little.. and have a ball...

If not the Lex, then you could try a beachmaster but they are awful expensive to use for eelskin plugs.

Hey Bob, welcome aboard... I just moved down to Rhody from that area - gonna miss Hu-Co-Scituate.... I know a company bought the rights to make Goo-Goos again and he's selling them around the SE Mass/Rhody areas. Are they as good as the orignial? I dunno. I saw 2 and 3oz varieties.

I was thinking with the Lex, is it better to bend the wire eye instead of the swimming plate?

I think cuttyhunktackle.com makes the new goo goo's. I bought one last year because I only have one old one that has seen it's day. Thats all we used to throw back in the 80's. Goo Goo's, smilin bill's and creek chubs.

John, I was ch#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g the one I bought,around block island 2yrs ago and it had a nice wobble to it. I paid I think about $15.00 for the baseball bat sized one.
I think the Lex are cheaper, I think I have one called the "surfster" good for back waters not good in rough surf.
