douglas fir for plugs?
 
has anyone used this, i have some and its dense, rot resistant.
and appears to have a tight grain .. and the best part i can get it for less than 50c lf for 2x2's .. any suggestions?

i used to use it for a bit. i used it for poppers, nothing else. very cheap, it doesnt turn as well as ayc but with a bit of sanding you can get it pretty SHmooTH , go for it.:)

you find a reliable source for ayc in the notsob area??

i am just outside that area and had no luck.. can get poplar,

birch, maple, and now fir. but no ayc..

its killing me..

i got a nice piece of the fir tonight. its got my mind going..

Douglass fir is good for small swimmers and poppers also good for needles. As it is farily dense it gets too heavy for big swimmers IMO. I should be sealed, I have hade no trouble with splitting but it does absorb water. One problem I have had with it is that there is variable results from one sample to another. The problem being that the growth rings are sometimes so much harder than the rest of the piece that it sands unevenly.

It does require more diligent sanding, but give nice weight to the poppers. I've made some big ones out of it. Seal sand seal. :)
