Think this will catch fish?
I'm not new to fly-tying, but this is my first attempt at saltwater fly-tying. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I hope I got it right
|
that's a real nice fly.
Should difinately work. What's the ingrediants ???? |
That looks like a fish catcher to me!!
One bit of info... If those are lead/brass dumbell eyes. Tied on top like that can cause the fly to sort of roll over on it's side a bit as the weight of the hook bend fights the weight of the eyes. I think this is a good thing mind you as it makes the fly look crippled. If you want the fly to ride true in the water, simply tie those eyes onto the bottom side of the hook shank. Do we get to see the fish that things going to catch?:) |
thanks for the advice canyondiver, I'm only a freshwater flyfisherman now. I'm hoping that sometimes in the summer I can take a shot at fishing for stripers on the fly. The ingredients for this fly are:
hook: 4/0 Thread: black Large brass eyes Tail (in order that I tied it): black marabou, 2 dark grizzly saddle hackles on the side, 3 extra long dun saddle hackle on each side, and one stiff pair of black hackle on the outside Body: black Chenile Beard: flared black deer hair |
Your fly
Great night time pattern! Fish it slowwwww in current. And be ready for a very subtle take.....
BTW: Those college p'fessers got better thangs ta do... They jist ain't sharin'.... :-) |
BASSMAN18, looks cool. keepem commin
GOOD LUCK GOOD TYIN :D P.S. if you run deer hair or feathers all the way around, it will make a coller an should PUSH a lot of water, an give a breathing action when stripping, just a thought. :smash: |
Thanks again for all your input. I'm gonna make a couple of changes to the design. I'll go with Saltydog's advice with the collar, and reposition the eyes like canyondiver said. would some crystal-flash work?
Steelhead- I know some might have a life...;) but one of them lives in the dorm next to mine... I'll post another pic of the modified whatchamacalit when I get a chance |
Another black eel pattern

This one got me my second biggest bass of the season, 10:30 at night in an estuary behind Cranes Beach.
|
Ahhh, the eel punt, my favorite black fly.
How big was the fish? |
niiiiiiiiiiiice
|
The fish was about 5 hands long... My hand span is +/-8".
I let it go.... It was a noble fish! |
cranes is a great spot! i fished it a few times this summer. i have some family in sandwich that i visited. scored a ton of bass up to about 42" on plugs. i am definately going to bring the fly rod out there this year. nice fly! :kewl: what do you use for the tail?
|
eel punt tail
It's a small bunch of long dark blue bucktail under a 12" long thin eggplant colored saddle hackle under 2 12" long thin natural black saddle hackles. The body is a webby natural black saddle hackle palmered the length of the shank of the hook, as tight as I can pack it. This is a great pattern. This dressing I got from Ken Abrames.

yes? no? maybe?
|
excellent tie!!!!
YES!!! Nice tie! Now try one with a sparse collar of bucktail between the eyes and the eye of the hook. Then between the collar of bucktail and the eye of the hook, do a few turns of marabou. It's going to get even more fishy! You're getting the idea. An emotional impression of the bait you're imitating! The fish's mind will fill in all the detail.

Better?
|
Even longer bucktail. the longest you have!!! You're going in the right direction! Keep at it! I'll tie one up and post it, so you can see what I'm talking about. You want the head of the fly to have movement, connecting the head of the fly to that beautiful tail you tied. The long bucktail and marabou will do that for you.

Banana Squid
1 Attachment(s)
This is one of my favorite squid patterns. It's called the Banana Squid. Can be tied from 4" to 12".
|
all those squids look great, i've been working on some myself lately experimenting with materials, one thing u might want to consider is that a squids tentacles is only about 1/3 of the squids overall length, i've been shortening the tentacles to try to get better proportion will post pic a.s.a.p.
|
Ok, now I got a better picture in mind. Thanks for all your help (last time I saw a squid was ten years ago when I was a wee lad fishing with grandpa on a party boat) I'll post a pic when I'm done.

IF you like that one you WILL LIKE this one it's 15" long body is 1 1/2 round mantel is 5" round an the feeler tenticles are 8"
"GOOD LUCK GOOD TYIN" :D |
STEELHEAD, you wanted the pattern
EXTRALONG SADDLE 2 strip to end, but leave a small section on maby 1/2 long depends on your fly size/ tie that on the hook, try to have then face outward of each outher on each side of the hook. then 5-6 feathers marabou (easy body tied in a spreader stile to put BIG eyes on) or use DEEPSEA EYES. it's easer an quicker, an weights the fly down. then some deer hair tied off w/ white thread to tapper body "GOOD LUCK GOOD TYIN":smash: |
Beautiful squids folks!!!:)
