back support belt

This winter for what ever reason my lower back has been aching so I figured I'ld start useing a lower back support belt for work. I got mine at home depot for about $12. It actually feels pretty good so I may try it under my waders....is anyone else doing this already?
I got a stiff right knee too:rolleyes: so I'm lookin for a little support....for the knee that is.:)

ever heard of

honey bee sting therapy? sounds strange but many people use it to re awaken the repair side of the body for leg areas. for some reason theres a breakdown of communication from the brain to the affected area and the subsequent sting and bee venom re-established the connection so that the brain sends repair tissue and pain relief chemicals to the area that has been stung. A second rememdy for the knee is emu oil made from the inner bones of the australian emu bird which is real hot stuff and is as hot later (delayed reaction bigtime) as a good sun burn.
it can acomplish the same thing. of course now there's peel and stick patches but they work mostly on a superficial level.
i think i'll get one of those belts though...

I've heard that a back support belt can be beneficial if worn for the task. But I've been told that it can also cause your back to get 'lazy' and weaken the muscles by causing them to to become sedentary (sp?) through lack of full use. I'm an advocate of ibuprofen for those types of malities!

I used one under my waders last summer marketed by orvis. It woked great and I had alot less fatigue while surfcasting. I used to get a wicked back ache using my 10' pole, hunched over all the time. I would say give it a try, helped me out.

It's from building to many rods

I thought about it too. Let us know how it works Goose. I get all stiff and sore after a few hours.

fishaholic18 03-16-2004 09:31 PM

Goose, I have back problem and wear a belt when lifting heavy things. Like Cookieman stated, don't wear it all the time or your back muscles get weak from relying on the belt all the time. I do stretches every day and that would probably help you. Sux getting old.:af: If you call 38 old.

One word Goose - Stretching

You have been away from the back breaking work and your muscles get out of tone, the back brace may help to remind yourself to tighten up your stomach muscles when you go to lift something heavy, but you are getting to the age where you have to be very careful of your back. Don't overdo it. Stretching and staying limber can prevent injury. Sounds like you need to strengthen the lower back muscles back up again.

Maybe do some research and not ask a bunch of obsessed fishermen ;)

Goose start researching here, they give you some stretches there somewhere.

....what you gotta do is START using the toilet instead of using those bags to put your fertilizer in....

Have seen freinds at work using belts by Valeo, I think they basically the same belts used by weightlifters.

in one word=yoga

strech that back out!! (dont worry there are plenty of beginner options for the flexibly challenged)

Stretch, and work on your abdominal muscles. Strong abs help prevent back problems.
