I stepped outside to Listen as its sprinkling here and sure enough they are peeping alright... awesome. Now its been my experience that snow will silence them for maybe a night or two
but thats just poor man's fertilizer....my grass is growing and tommorow i'll start planting sugar snap peas that i bought today.

Last year we started what will certainly be an annual "adventure" trip. I took my oldest three kids, seven, five, and two; and we made an overnight trek to the Cape to get the annual Race Pt ORV sticker. Thats five hours from my neck-of-the-woods!!! Well, about 45 minutes into the trip, we came to an intersection and had to slow way down, thats when I heard the peepers..as loud as I can ever remember. I turned the truck around and we pulled over and just listened to the peepers for what must have been 2-3 minutes. If you have kids that age, you know that it takes something real cool, to keep them totally silent for that long. Anyway, every time we talk about the "adventure", thats the kid's best memory. I just hope they are making a lot of noise this year on 15 April at about 8 PM....keep your fingers crossed!!!

Little frogs, you hear them near swamps ponds as soon as it starts to warm. They call them spring peepers. They kida sound like a huge stadium of crickets.

I was thinking that but never heard em called peepers

Thank God, I thought it was me - I had the window cracked drivin' down 1A South in Narragansett tonite and I thought I heard 'em, figured it's been too long a winter and I was hearin' things.

I was so shook up I had to drive all the way down to the Bon Zoo for a coupla cold lagers :buds:

Ain't done that in a while.

And I was right, too - not only do they still have great fish tacos, they got a whole damned sushi menu down there. :eek5:

is what they are called when they all gather together in spring to sing their mating calls. The males being the most vocal and the females tuning in to the mid range of the song. When you approach a very large group (army) they are very sensitive to
any sounds because of predators like racoons and will instantly go silent. With in a few minutes one frog will start and then the others start up so as not to be left out of the competition and if your sitting quietly nearby the sound of a thousand frogs singing simutaneously can be deafoning.

Haven't heard the peepers yet, but I did see some earthworms under the pile of next winter's wood i started to split on Friday. SOON :D

1st warm rain gets 'em peepin.

I saw a Huge Tom Turkey walking aroud my Street. Yesterday!!

During last weeks rain storm, I musta ran over 30 of them as they crossed Main Street. Happens every storm. Was a welcomed site to see even though the little buggers got gished!

I had a turkey in my Yard on Friday and he was determined to stand out in the middle of the road and like Mr Macey says become "road kill" so i grabbed a lawn rake and circled around him and herded him to the back lot where theres safer territory.
I was surprised at how tame he was because i was walking just six feet behind him the whole time.:cool:

Anyone notice how many skunks are sleeping in the middle of the roads lately?! Lotsa them out now too!

but I was driving at night and hit this 35lb racoon it was huge thump thump I felt so bad so the next day 4 ppl said did you see the size of the racoon someone hit Im like no where so it was a couple nights later and in the same spot had the wife with me 3 racoons the rest of the family was crossing in the same spot said to my wife there looking for there dad and she started crying .

there peeping here in western mass heard them on sat nite have small pond out back leave the bedroom window cracked and they will put you right too sleep

Mike! as racoons cross the road like a race horse with those blinders on so they can't/wont look sideways..... in other words racoons won't turn their heads and look towards oncoming traffic and are very much less aware and agile than say a squirell is crossing the road. They point themselves in one direction and basically waddle slowly in a straight line.
knowing that you can try to miss them but never screech on the brakes and wipe out your car trying to avoid them thus endangering your loved ones.

The first time I heard spring peepers was after a day of fishing up in Chelmsford. I stopped just past the Concord river when I heard an unusual sound coming from the marsh along the riverbank. Once I stopped, the sound was incredible, echoing all around me. I started laughing, because it instantly made me think of that movie.

Bassmaster has so many Cedar Plugs the spring peepers moved into his man cave. Oh MY !:D

this morning i saw my first osprey fishing, he didn't score

Saw my first turtle on Friday. The golden rule for amphibians is that they appear on the first night of warmer rain of the season. Usually has to be @ 50 degrees. Reptiles usually come out a bit later, that's why I was surprised to see the turtle.

mikey...i saw a garter snake on december 15th one year and was mazed to see it slither over patches of snow,,,, i was like WTF...???? turtles love dog food nuggets so i always bring some when fishin....

I used to have a buddy that sold snapping turtles to some Polish guy for soup. His parents would let him keep all the turtles in their pool. Not many people know that if you throw a snapping turtle (that's out of water) a ball they'll snap at it, bouncing the ball right back to you. Kind of like a trained seal I guess:confused:
