drilling out the penn Z
 

OK guys I know I've seen posts and pics on the drilled out penn's before but cant find um using the search...Well got to drill one now, so some pics please or a link....And I saw one pic where the bottom of the spool itself was drilled also,and I dont see why...BEN ,DITCH??LET ME HAVE IT:smash:

i had some pictures of mine around somewhere in my computer, but i can not find them now. it is pretty easy. i'll try to explain what i did.

first, remove the rotor cup. i put the cup in my drill press and just drilled a hole in between each support piece. try to stay as much in the center of each space as possiblr to avoid messing up the balance of the reel. next, measure around the outside of the cup and mar evenly space points all the way around to drill out the sides. i did two rows of holes, alternating the holes on top and bottom. the last step for drilling i did was to drill out the spool. much the same as the rotor, you want evenly spaced holes. i did both the top and bottom of the spool.

after all the holes are drilled, you want to sand down all your holes with a fine grit sand paper to remove any line cutting nicks. i dis-assembled the entire reel and sanded the metal down at this point. you can get the paint of your choice, i used a rustoleum black, and paint up the reel. i used two coats, allowing a day between the first and second application. put the reel back together, pack the gear housing with grease, and you are set to fish.

i have done this with both a 704 and a 706. the same process for both reels.

I did the same thing to evenly space your holes take masking tape and tape it on the rotor, it's about 5" on both sides. take it off then with a ruler you can draw the even spacing, I then stick it back on and useing a drywall screw press firmly on your marks scoring the rotor.

And how "Van Staalish" is this reel once tweaked like this. And as a 706, anyone get a different / larger roller pickup?

i am looking for the 706 now. i thought it was under the back seat of my truck, but it is no where to be found. if i find it, i'll snap some pics. i do have a partially drilled out 704 i found yesterday in a box of junk. if the 706 doesn't pop up, maybe i'll just finish the 704 up.

Tony, my camera lost juice this a.m....guess Toby beat me to it. :hihi: Just be careful not to drill through any reinforced spots or where might be metal.

If you want the finish to really last before you apply the paint prime the reel with Rustoleum clean metal primer,then apply your 1st coat of paint.Between coats of paint sand with 400grit sandpaper.After the second coat of paint is totally cured topcoat it with a spray lacquer.
Your reel will look fantastic and the finish really last!

Even with that many holes it still feels pretty stirdee....we'll see whether its rocky freindly;)
