before you prime your plugs? I am going to use zinseer 123 in the blue can...:confused:....do I just prime with that first or do you recommend the linseed oil? :huh:

When and why would you want to use linseed oil?:confused:

anything u can get your hands on for sealing....I don't care what others say, wood , even ayc will suck up water....water gets in wood, wood swells up.can crack paint and clear coat...water gets in plug, gets water logged. water gets in, water trys to get out,,off go's ya paint.......enough said. seal your plugs.. yeh linsy's good, cut with minerial thinner....not turp's or paint thinner.

i'de dip em in fiberglass resin.
aint nothin going to penetrate the wood after that.
make sure the wood is warm and dry first.

me too way back when ..useta make thoce wooden airoplanes an rice paper....then coat the paper with bannana oil....always like the taste an smell of that stuff.:spin:

Capesams, at what proportion would I mix the linseed oil and mineral thinner? Also where do I aquire these products?:confused: Do you brush them on or dip them? How long to dry before prime and paint?:huh:

Bigfish ,make sure you use boiled linseed oil, not regular linseed oil. fishing freak, how long have you been using the resin coating for? curious if it cracks after a while. wood constantly expands and contracts even if incapusalated, would think that the resin would crack soon or later causing problems.

IFishInVT, does the linseed oil come "boiled"? In a can? Call me stupid, this is new to me.:smash:

BigFish, check the paint section of Home Depot or any other store that sells paint. They probably have the boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. Mix 60% linseed with 40% spirits. I dip mine. Took a section of PVC pipe longer than the plugs I am dipping. Put an end cap glued on one end. Set up a jig to hold it up right. Pour in the linseed and spirits. Use a piece of wire in the tail of the plug, dip the plug in and hold it under for 20 seconds. Pull out and let drip, then whip off the extra with a rag. Hang to dry. Make sure you dispose of the rags properlly cause they can spontaniously combust. I have an empty paint can (picked up one at homies) that I'll add some water too. Rags go in there, then put the top back on.

Thanks Jigman, I got to go to Home Depot today! That was what I was looking for. Just one more thing, how exactly, do you measure your linseed oil and mineral spirits? :confused:

Also Jigman, what can you do with the leftover oil and spirits? Save them or dump them and where should I properly dispose of them?:)

I use a glass. Fill it up for the linseed, less so for the spirits. If you wanted to get anal, you could get a measuring cup and do it.

Oops, forgot the second part :rolleyes: I leave the mix in the PVC pipe. Have an end cap that I'll put on top. Ready to go for the next time. You could also get a spare paint can and store it in that.

I soak my plugs over nite...the harder the wood the longer the soak.

I'm tryin val-oil now,,,been around for a long time..good for wood,metal.cement...takes about the same time to dry....after the plugs r done soakin, wipe down ,hang an forget them for a week in a heated room...go spin more or prime others that have been sittin ..always something to do while the others are dryin.

rushing only makes waste.

Hey Cape, I thought the "dip" was supposed to be no more than 50 seconds. I ferget who insisted this was the magic #, but he also said with the 60/40 ratio, the plugs would never dry if left soaking overnite because of the thin mineral spirit viscosity it soaks in Very deep. Just curious, you guys are the experts for sure, so im only asking if this was the possible ? :confused:

After the linseed oil dries, should I give it a light scuff before priming? Also, do I scuff primer before painting? Also, do I scuff paint before envirotex coating?:huh:

I've never sanded the sealer...just the primer with 320. Covers whatever grain left nicely.

BigFish, only scuff the paint coat if you put on a scratch coat. If you scuff the airbrush paint it could come right off

Hey Cape Sams so how are u gettin by waiting for the oils to dry to spray the multiple colors.Or Do U spray all at once cleaning the gun(PITA)what are u thinning with I messed with oils a ways back but I stopped I like the finish seems stronger.but More difficult to deal with.

i thought u where shootin oils.I like cans.the airbrush is cool but I haven't broke it out in a while.Runny like flo yellow.I just painted a Slip body pikie.Flow yellow.with a petey the Dog eye.came out nice.I like soakin anything is better that nothin. Weren't u usin wood hardener at one time I remember a pic with a container an come plugs in it with a stick on top.The guy at the paint shop told me the lineseed oil holds water an promotes mildew.I hate
dewy plugs.
