Sunglasses

Time for some new shades to use on the boat!
Have tried several types. Wondering what brands and color lens People here would recomend? I liked the moui jims in amber but they're expensive and, they got scratched up. The dark grey Ray Bans were too dark. The cheapo walmart glasses were Junk. Hopefully there's something middle of the road that really cuts the glare and lets you see thru the water!! Any suggestions!

Maui Jim " Kahuna" very pricey but excellent sunglasses. Glass lenses.

Also a Maui Jim clone called Pacific Trader. Several styles, glass lenses. Helluva nice pair of glasses for about $60 @ Sam's Club

"Sunglasses"

I find it best to use Winchester Wrapparound Shooting glasses,
there plastic, but hard to scratch and last a real long time. I
like them because they take all the glare out.

I have Costa Del Mars - great glasses and price break between run of the mills and the bigger coin Maui's/Ocean Waves. One thing that sold me on not using glass is the impact resistant resins. You get a jig pop out of a fish's mouth or break free from a rock, it could save your eyes. But they scratch a little easier too.

I wanted to get a few different glasses for a site comparison but it's down the list :rollem: . Also look into Action Optics and H2O Optix (by Serengetti?) for price/value FISHING glasses.

H2Optix are great shades for the price...........around 85$

I bought a pair of Action Optics from the SaltWater Edge and they are nice. Had pair of Costa's for my last pair and they were great too.

Amber Maui Jim's are the best. A few years ago I spent nearly a Van Staal's worth on a supreme prescription pair. They were great until my eyes changed :smash:

Oh to be single again :p

I was able to find a new pair of costa del mar killer waves on ebay for about $110.00. That's the cheapest I've seen them for. Great glasses without an "over the top" price.

Ocean Waves.
They are a little more expensive but worth every cent. I've worked on the ocean most of my life and the Ocean Waves have the best view and are extremely scratch resistant.

If you need perscription lenses...then MJ is the way to go for primo fishing glasses but expect to drop some serious coin. (like 300-600 bucks depending on frames and lenses) If you DON'T need perscription, then there the others listed here in the 50-125 buck range provide excellent protection and the same clarity offshore IMO. I dropped my MJ's on a tile floor and cracked the lense...they were $550 sunglasses. I sent them back and they replaced both lenses for 100. That day I went to the sunglass hut and bought 2 pair of non-perscripton for 80 each and they work fine. (actully better while driving a boat @ 30 knots because they are wrap around, you can't get perscription in wrap around.) I keep the pricey MJ's in the in the case now and put them on when I want to look kewl going out to dinner with the "Jet-Set".

I'm to clum-sea to trusted with expensive glasses. Pay big bucks for carbon frames indistructable ect...... for what? so I can loose them or run over with my boat or truck. If I spend 30$ and get two pairs of polarized glasses and they last me one season then I'm content with that. Sure I know big dollar lense is a better lense & frame and more comfort but, unless I where to do alot of sight fishin then I realy don't sea the need.;)

I guess all I'm realy trying to say is I got cut corners some where and maximise my tackle the best I can on my budget and glass is not one of them.

For cheapo polarized sunglasses, try FLYING FISHERMEN or SEASTRIKER brand. .

Mr. Sandman 04-13-2004 12:09 PM

REAL bass fisherman don't need sunglass...they fish at night.:D

Goose, I think you are right. Unfort, I had been convinced I had to have these expensive perscription lenses, then I broke them. Are the better...yes, are the worht the $...no, not unless you NEED them.

There is a noticable difference between the 12 buck wallmarts and the costa del mars or action optics that I think most fisherman would like on those intense glare days when you thank God you remembered to bring your sunglasses.

I have never lost a pair overboard...what I loose overboard are pliers, I loose lots of pliers overboard and as soon as they rust I get POed and throw them overboard. Sunglasses..I just brake those.
