Newport/RISAA Fishing Spot Clean Up
 

I know we've already put a post up but I thought I would remind ya that the two RI clean ups will take place this Saturday. It appears the weather is going to be good for these events so lets clean it up. Any help would be great for these events. Thanks!

Newport Fishing Spot Clean Up

Date: April 17th, 2004
Place: The Saltwater Edge
Time:10am -1pm

We’ll be meeting at the Saltwater Edge at 10am to divide up the people into small teams to help speed up the task at hand.


The Saltwater Edge and the Newport County Fishing Club have joined together to try and help out and clean up some of our fishing spots in Newport . It would be great to see some people turn out for this just for the fact that if we are not proactive and let the homeowners and town members see us trying to make a difference, the access to some of the most fertile fishing grounds in New England could be lost. What we’re looking for are volunteers to help out on Saturday April 17th to clean up some of the trash along the Cliff Walk and Ocean Drive . Most of the areas that need it bad are from the rock pile at Brenton State Park north to Castle Hill Light and along the Cliff Walk from the areas south of Wetmore St. to Ledge Rd. We will meet at the Saltwater Edge in Newport at 10 am and depending on the turn out divide people up into teams and start the clean up. The town officials in Newport will be picking up the garbage bags on Monday so we’ll leave them around the clean up areas for them to pick up. The SWE will supply trash bags and the Newport County Fishing Club will supply locator maps of the area for helping out on clean up locations. You could also map out some of the better fishing spots at the same time. Bring gloves, snacks, drinks, and lots of fishing stories.

With support from local fisherman, we can make not only our fishing spots much cleaner, but make some of the other anglers aware of the problem and make them understand that our access will be lost if we don’t make an effort to make other anglers more aware of this issue. We hope to see everyone there and if you can’t make it onto the island, try and participate in the clean up taking place on the same day by RISAA on the west side of the bay as well as along the West Wall in Pt. RISAA Shoreline Clean Up
Saturday, April 17, starting at 8:30 A.M.

For the people who may not be able to get over to Newport to help us out RISSA is doing a very similar clean up along the beaches of South County. For more information please read the following:

RISAA will hold its second annual Shore Clean-Up Day on Saturday, April 17, starting at 8:30 A.M. (Rain Date Sunday, April 18). We hope that you will attend. Please join one of our groups starting out at the following locations:

1. Salty Brine Beach behind George's of Galilee, Narragansett. Park in the State parking lot. This group will meet and clean up this beach and then proceed to Point Judith and other public shoreline areas to the north in Narragansett. Armand Tetreault, Paul Laflamme, and our Junior members will be in charge of this group.

2. The West Wall (on the Jerusalem side of the channel), Narragansett. Parking is located about one mile passed East Matunuck State Beach on Succotash Road. Park only in areas permitted across from Jim's Dock and near the State Pier. Paul Karcz and I will be in charge of this group. We will clean the first length of the breakwall and the adjacent beach. Then this group will proceed to Deep Hole and shoreline areas south into South Kingstown.

State trucks will travel with each group. Garbage bags will also be provided. Bring gloves, snacks, drinks, and lots of energy. We will work until about 2:30 P.M. and then meet up back at Charlie O's, Point Judith Road, Narragansett for some relaxation and refreshments. Newport Fishing Spot Clean Up

Thanks for posting a reminder, Corey :btu:- as I mentioned earlier, I'm not gonna be able to help out on this one because I have a gig on Saturday and just can't say no to the money. I will be there to pitch in on the next one.

One thing I think we have to be mindful of is the fact that most - but not all - the places we fish here and in So.Co. are public. But the ones that adjoin private properties should be handled in a respectful fashion. And in some cases, unless some sort of prior arrangement has been made, we have to be careful of trespassing. You know what I mean but I think it merits a mention, anyway.

Hey, hope to see ya tonite - it's the last meeting of the year, the Iron Skillet gets his trophy for the Sixty :cheers: and it's a potluck nite, too - I'm even gonna make my special Drunken Titog Stew (with too much vermouth as usual - heheheheh) with a made-from-scratch fish stock base - Cap'n Fred was nice enough to donate some Blackfish and Cod fillets. Thanks again, Fred!

Anyone else planning on making it to the festivities at the west wall?

Thanks Chuck. I hope to see some people show. Hay, like I tell most. Don't cry when the access is completly gone. Just a thought. It could happen real soon in some pretty PUBLIC spots.

Another incentive for people is that you get to see some nice fishing locales and the others in the cleanup may impart some local knowledge for you :)

Mike, I was with the group cleaning up the west wall, did you make it there?

I managed to find two plugs - a mambo and a creek chub...tide was nice and low too, was able to see most of carpenter's.

Saw a few fishing at the wall and one guy at carpenter's, but nada.

My RISAA Juniors Committee ended up doing the break wall behind Georges, The Galilee Boat Ramp, Black Point Fishing Area, Hazzard Ave, and Bass Road. It was a wonderful event. Thanks to all who volunteered and jumped in with us.
