Mouth of the CT

They're on the way. Saw some pictures of some schoolies that had been taken from the Ct river yesterday. With the warm weekend forcast, I'm guessing we'll be starting to get em in Western MA some time next week. Yee-haw!!!!

Those CT fish were hold overs, and can be found all the way to Enfield and beyond. There are a ton of schoolies in the river year round. Look for the Thames to turn on before the CT. Look for points on RI, to heat up before the Thames. Ocean temps are only just breaking 40 this week. There is still some time before the fresh arrive.

Since the mouth of the CT is further South then the Themes and RI, wouldn't fish show up first in the CT? I think the interior of the Sound would warm up faster then say the waters off of Watch Hill. I'm pretty sure that these fish aren't holdovers. But then again, I also am a very optimistic person when it comes to fishing and just want the season to start. So please, don't burst my bubble. I'll be fishing for em all next week regardless. :D

The last three years, the Thames has turned on two weeks ahead of the CT. I doubt this year will be different. As the fish turn the corner at Montauk and squeeze between there and Block Island on the migration, RI is the closest, then the Thames and then the CT River.

Those were definately hold overs. We hear of bass getting caught in the shad gill nets down at the mouth of the CT which signals the beginning of the run. The shad netters have only begun fishing this year, and they are getting few shad. Have not heard of any striped bass in the nets yet. When I here about the bycatch is when I begin to look for the fish south of Hartford. A week or two later they can be found further up river.
