this is a pretty stoopid question but....
 

What is the meaning of the rod #'s... Is it a loading issue, a length??

The reason I'm confused is that different MFG co's have the same blank # and they are considerably different..

Usually the last digit of a blank # indicates what "power rating" the manufacturer assigned to the rod. This not only varies from company to company, but even the same manufacturer will assign different power ratings to the same blank that's sold under different applications.

Example---Loomis made two rods on the same blank--the SUR 1084S and the SWR 108-20. As a spinning rod in the "surf" application it was given a medium "4" power rating. As a casting rod in the "saltwater" application, it was given a light "2" power rating. Same blank--same butt diameter, same tip diameter, same taper, same blank weight, two different power ratings.

It's no wonder people get confused.

Normally the first 3 digits in a blank model # refer to the length in inches. You'd think that this would be a constant, huh? Not always--the Rainshadow SW108- series rods are actually 106" long, not 108" :wall:

Ok that makes sense to me.. I was only confused because I have a batson 1209 and yestesrday I held a breakaway 1209 and the breakaway was a totally different action(almost no give to it) so I figured the 3 was a lenght..

It is a litttle confusing but I get it now..

I have to agree it is confusing.
The SU 1209 Batson Rainshadow and the AllStar 1209 are the same but the SW 1209 Batson is different.:wall:

If you tell what you will be doing with the 1209 , we could tell you what rod is more suitable. Maybe an Allstar 1208 insetad of 1209 too?. What's the application?

Actually It turns out, I have a 1208. See I told you I was confused:laughs:
so as I held the breakaway 1209 I just couldnt understand what was going on..

Saltheart, I'm not looking to buy a new rod at this point in time, A friend of mine has the breakaway- But, with the 1208, I plan on throwing wood with it off the RI coast.. mostly rocky areas... No plugs over 4 oz....

Up to 4 OZ , the allstar 1208 is perfect for that.

I've been waiting to use it.. its never seen the suds... Its a Batson blank, but the allstar and the batsons are pretty much the same..no?

I have a 11' honey lami that i think I'd use for anything over 4 oz.. like chunks o meat and such

The Batson SU's are the same, the SW's are something like a number lower. So the 1209 Batson is more like the All Star 1208. Not sure if the taper is the same.

I've got the All Star 1208 and it will throw 3 ounces a veeeeerrrrrrryyyyyyy long way.

I wouldn't compare the original Batsons to the Allstars. The new Batsons SU designation may be , we'll see. I would say an older Batson 1208 will not do 4 well but an Allstar 1208 will.
