Replace Racor Gasoline Fuel Filter/Water Separators Element
I purchased a replacement filter element for my fuel filter/water separator. My question is what is the proper method for replacement? I don't want to spill gasoline into my bildge. I have checked the plastic bowl and don't see any liquid, however when I opened the check valve I felt some gas come out of it.
I have a Racor 320-RAC-01 filter (replacement element is S3228 UL). Clear plastic bowl at bottom. I searched the internet for instructions, but cannot find them. http://mastercatalog04.westmarine.co...ckProdId=72589 Thanks, Jim got fish? |
Hi Jim, I just bought the same filters and installed them in my boat. I have twin outboards so i did it twice. I just unscrewed the old ones ( did not have the clear base) being careful not to tip and oiled up the new one and screwed it on. I didn't spill a drop. Mine are attached at each side of my transom and easey to access. I hope this helps. Once you have the unit removed you can seperate the two parts somewhere that you are not worried about getting some fuel on. I didn't even fill the new one with fuel as I had heard conflicting advice about it. They filled fine on their own when I started the motors.

I just changed mine and it was a bit*ch, basically because where it's located on my boat. I did it the first time without filling it with fuel, then had to do it all over again, filling it with fuel because I couldn't get gas to the motor. Make sure you put oil on the rubber seal to keep it from drying out and cracking.

Drain plastic bowl off into bucket then unscrew filter into same bucket.......done. Lube new filter gasket with motor oil and hand tighten new filter.

Just installed one of these in my boat - is it necessary in all cases to fill it with fuel. I thought it was a little funky when I sqeezed the bulb, I have not run yet with the new set-up. :confused:

You will need a strap wrench or two to do the job. One and a large bench vise will work to. Check for leaks carefully next time you run the motor. Carry a couple of spares onboard in case you get some bad gas.

I have always filled it with fuel prior to re-assembly. I think that it is a pretty sizeable air slug and might cause some fuel pumps to hickup. Then again you might turn the key and be fine....
Before you leave the dock I would BE SURE that you are getting fuel and not just running on what was in the line. Look in the clear bowl and see that fuel is in there. You don't want to pull away, give her the gas and have her crap out. |
