"Surf Rod Length"
What is the best Surf Rod Length?
|
I like long rods from the sand (11 or more) but shorter in the rocks (9 to 10) .

Match the right tool to the right application.
In places where you have shallow, gently sloping beaches, you might want to have a heaver that reaches the structure (or currents) and the fish. 12 to 14+ feet is not uncommon down in places like the Outer Banks of NC. Up here, maybe something in the 9-10 foot range is more suitable. On the Outer Beaches of the Cape, 9 foot is better, especially if you're fishing at night - you don't need to cast over the fish. In rocky spots in Rhody, I like a 10 footer b/c you get a bit more control over a fish, which helps when you're landing in a rock pile. But these are just my preferences... -WW |
in the surf/rocks i throw 10' 99% of the time. i have a couple jigging applications where i throw a 9' rod. i also built a 11' spinner a few years back, but it doesn't see much use lately. there is no perfect rod. hence the reason why i have piles of rods........ :smash:

It's been years since I even bothered taking my 11 footers down from the rafters. Only exception is the 1322 I use for breaking tides at the Canal.
I think 10' is a versatile length if you can only have one rod. |
I use an 8' in the bays and rivers, a 9.5' on the outer beaches only had problems reaching the fish a couple of times. But haven't thrown my shoulder out since I put the 11' footer up in the rafters.

10' seems right to me - use it for plugs, jigs and eels.
Got a new 10'6' honey glass Lami I just had new guides put on - hopefully I'll christen it in Saturday's Tourney :D. |
