daiwa blackgold reels

has anyone fished with the daiwa blackgold reels $85 seems like a good buy

Bernzy 06-25-2004 11:37 AM

Rock solid, all metal construction. I aquired 2 of them back in 1987. I still fish with them. No problems at all
Daiwa has been making that reel for about 20 years.

I have a BG15 for light tackle and it is a solid reel with a good drag. My first surf fishing reel (purchased from Bradlees by myself) was a bronze colored version of the BG20 or 30 and that reel although looks a little rough now still works after 25 years.

my uncle fishes the BG30's and swears by them. U can get them on ebay for under $50

Tough reels. They came out at about the same time as the original Penn SS series. Probably not the most braid-friendly (small bushing-backed roller and uneven line spooling) but they'll probably work fine with Fireline---most of the older spinning models do fine with FL.

classic reel. I retired the one I have as a back up and it sits ready to go. Many a fish caught on that puppy.
This was always a popular reel. Personally I liked their graphite body rear drag reel better..but they dropped it and I could not get parts and had to retire them to the scrap parts heap. (It was nice and light and warm to the touch on cold fall nights and you could numerically pre-set the drag and use a lever to adjust on the fly without overdoing it....sort of like an early baitrunner)

....the fact they are still making the BG says something. IMO if you are looking for a good value this is one to consider...of course penn makes a few value reels as well.

how do people like the okuma baitrunner reels the only thing i dont like is its hard to find a good service center for them

The Dad Fisherman 06-25-2004 02:09 PM

I'd keep the Okumas for the fresh. They can't take a beating very well for saltwater and/or the rocks

i use my okuma bait runner on the canal for 2yrs never had it brake sending it in for a overhaul saturday

Diawa BGs

I have 2 BG 60s,a BG 20,,a 15,13 and a 10,,,all are great reels, never had a problem. The 60s are a little bit heavey,,but no more so than the Penn 704,,the drags are excellent,,,keep them clean and you'll never be unhappy with them.

just bought a bg30 for a 1087, put #40 powerpro on it all i can say is NICE!!
honestly haven't had much time to abuse the reel yet... did notice the line not laying properly on the spool though.

ask anyone who knows me... i'm still fishing with a couple of diawa 9000C silver series on my chunking rods.. these reels are atleast 25 years old and have hung in there like a champ

Mr. Sandman 06-27-2004 11:59 AM

Redcrab,

I have one I will part with...nearly "new" with extra spool. 9000C Silver series. I have not used in 20 years (no lie) and I don't see me needing it. I bought it for a 16' rod (also 20+ years old) lthat I don't plan on ever using either but it looks cool on the rack. Perhaps we can make a trade of some kind. Think about it. I don't know if I have the original box or not I have to look.
This series reel was great, I mainly used the 6000 for spinning back then.

let me know if you are interested.
