(not) waterproof jacket
 

I have a hodgman wadelite breathable jacket that i bought last year. About 3-4 months of use the fabric lost the coating that made it bead water. I brought it to the shop where i bought it, and was able to exchange it for another. Now i'm having the same problem with the new one.
I've heard you can make them waterproof by using scotch-guard on them, should i use that, or is there something else i can do to make it waterproof again? :huh:

stuff works good. I use it on my golf bag. Weighs pounds less when it rains than before I coated it.

can you get your money back?

then go buy a $20 non-waterproof jacket and put some scotchguard on...


I owned the bibs all for just 3 days last year... same day i bought them i went out on a 2 day adventure... it rained for a day and a half... about 5 hours in the rain i started to get wet.. nothing bad but still..... the end of the day my jeans were damp but didn't think it was that bad... when i woke up 5 hours later i put the bibs on and went back out on the deck only to come back in less then 2 hours i was soaked... if it wasn't for the mate who lent me a pair of grudens my 2 day trip would have sucked...

Yeah it does bother me that i paid $100 for a jacket that doesn't do what it should. Don't get me wrong the pockets & cuffs ect. are great, but for the money i could've gotten a grundens jacket that i KNOW will last.
It does have a lifetime warranty and i'm think about tring to get the cash back.

Here's my two cents on the whole matter---you can have a breatheable jacket, or you can have a waterproof jacket, but you can't have a breatheable AND waterproof jacket---not for very long, anyhow. :mad:

I hear they are coming out with a Bassmaster "Cape Cod" Breathable edition.

And his fishin buddies are none to happy about it :af:

fleece is breathable,water resistant and keeps you warm when wet this is why i love my fleece pullovers

I have a set of Frogg Toggs,they are light, breathable,and very dry.They can be folded-up into a large gallon size freezer bag. I tried a lot of other gear and I'm very happy with the Frogg Toggs.

At this point mike, i cant agree with you more. Breathable is a bunch of bull. Water can go one way, but not the other...yeah right.
If anything my jacket works backwards.....the rain or surf gets the jacket wet, and takes forever to dry. Maybe the guy at the hodgman factory made a mistake and made my jacket inside out :smash:

Until Goretex XCR is affordable, the current "breathable" stuff is crap. Other than some of the more reasonable Shoeller fabrics.

XCR is a super high tech fabric they use in high end foul weather gear/winter hardshells that actually does breath really well and stays waterproof no matter what.

Most spray shells are still running on fabrics/materials that are 10 years behind the current curve and are total crap unfortunately.

Soon as Gil or someone else starts making an XCR spray shell, I'll be happy getting wet. ;)

So in closing, there ARE waterproof AND breathable shells.

They're just in the 300+ (my arc'teryx shell cost me $500/foul weather gear as a set over $1000) price range :(
