How BIG

Of a fish does it take to completely straighten a VMC 5/0 Siwash hook with a 6'6" St Croix Musky rod, 12 lb test, and a Penn 5500?

Flaptail 07-07-2004 09:09 PM

Do I win anything if I get this one right?:laughs:

Nebe 07-07-2004 09:11 PM

you'd think that the 12 lb test line would break before the hook would straighten...

maddog2020 07-07-2004 09:17 PM

U musta forgot to turn on the ventilation when you were spraying paint again, huh?! ;)

Saltheart 07-08-2004 07:59 AM

A single hook with bait or was it on a plug?

likwid 07-08-2004 08:21 AM

:hihi:

RIROCKHOUND 07-08-2004 08:23 AM

too big for you that day....

olive danny :humpty: :humpty:

UserRemoved1 07-08-2004 08:36 AM

Saltheart I don't fish bait :D

UserRemoved1 07-08-2004 08:39 AM

Eben I would have thought so too, I had no control on this fish at any point, I'm surprised the rod didn't blow up, it was bent right down to the cork :D

The Dad Fisherman 07-08-2004 09:49 AM

The big question is what line were you using......If that isn't a testament to its strength I don't know what is.

maddog2020 07-08-2004 09:53 AM

If u were using Yoz Hybrid that 10 lb breaks WAY higher than rating! ;)

What rod is this - Ugly Stick ? :D

UserRemoved1 07-08-2004 10:02 AM

Maxima perfexion line, new to me this year, nice stuff too!

likwid 07-08-2004 10:05 AM

UserRemoved1 07-08-2004 10:07 AM

I can compress the barb back towards the shank with my thumb on those VMC Siwash hooks. That's why I don't use them any more ;)

In fact, I'm down on Siwash hooks generally. Mustad stainless are brittle, and the tinned Mustads aren't what they used to be. I'm using Mustad O'Shaugnessies with a HD ring for a single lure hook.

likwid 07-08-2004 12:05 PM

Seems like those VMC's are hit or miss....

Never had an issue with them personally, but this isn't the first i've seen bent like that.

UserRemoved1 07-08-2004 12:17 PM

I have a hard time getting them to squish down Mike so I'm a little surprised to hear you say that....u got steel fingers? :D

I find they're brittle more than anything, but only if you TRY to bend them....doing something you not sposed to do in the first place

I snapped a new 7/0 VMC siwash while trying to unhook a fish last night with pliers...it just snapped, I was real surprised. The trebbles are seem stronger.

I like the shape of the siwash for a tail hook. I think though you need to keep the super sharp, if they don't set and just hang on the tip, you can create a very larger bending moment that prys just about anything open like that. You need to bury that point into the fish IMO.

Nice to see you get them on poppers salty!

UserRemoved1 07-08-2004 12:58 PM

yesterday was ALL topwater stuff Jim, all 1.25 oz olive/white or blue/white buggerplugs.

That plug was pretty fresh, probably had 10 or so fish on it before this one....

Gloucester2 07-08-2004 01:56 PM

How big do Blooofish get :D

RIROCKHOUND 07-08-2004 01:58 PM

Come on, tell the poor guy what he wants to hear...definitely a fifty pounder did that.

Saltheart 07-08-2004 03:18 PM

Must have been Moby #^&#^&#^&#^& to bend that hook!! :)

or.......Picture of plug tell the story. With the treble hook and the tail hook , leverage between the two can bend any hook. Anyway , seeing the plug , the bent hook doesn't surprise me. That sort of thing happens often.

rizzo 07-08-2004 05:26 PM

Depending on how the fish is hooked they can use the power of their jaws to straighten a hook. I've seen it happen with split rings and hooks right at my feet, with no pressure at all on the plug from the line.
