4500 is the next one down. The 4500 would better suit you with a 9' rod @ 1-4 oz. The 6500 makes for a good big bait reel.

The 3500B would work equally as well on a 9' rod. :)

Bring your rod down to the shop and see how it balances/feels with the 3500 & 4500.

I use a 3500B on an 8' St. Croix Ben Doerr and a 7' Tidemaster- very happy with the reel.

Definatly go with the 4500 for that rod series, it will balance out perfect.

I got the 3500 for my 7' ocean master (rated for 15-40lb test) and really like it. I spooled braid so line capacity is less of an issue since it has a smaller diameter.

Its a nice outfit for the boat. Not too bulky.

I fish pretty shallow though, so I'm not likely to run out of line.

i am going to get the 4500B for fishing live eels/chunkin the reel has a good line compacty on it better than my okuma that has 205 yards of 20

baitrunners are a fantastic reel.... the 6500 would be good for a 7' slammer... heavy for getting eels into the rocks.... I also own a 3500 and 4500.... couldn't imagine fishing without them

The 4500 is a good match up with the 7' heavy slammer rod. On my 9' rod for throwing plugs the 3500 matches better than the 4500. I have a 10' with my 4500 and an 11' for my 6500. the only reason I went to the 6500 was line capacity for sand spiking. I run braided line on all of them.

The Abu 7000C3 came highly recommended when I asked the same question several years back and I have been happy with the reel. The retreive ratio is a little low for jiggin in that at the end of the drift when you are trying to get the jig up over the 'ledge' you have to crank like crazy to avoid loosing the jig but for plugs it is great. I took a 36 & 1/2lb 48inch striper with it on a pencil popper (Hawg Hunter) back in May. For a rod try the 'canal special' that Mike Thomas at M&D's offers.
