Hi everyone,

First post

I bought my first boat this year (live in Jamestown, RI - it's probably a crime not to have one down here), and me and my 2 boys have been doing reel good on fluke over in Mackeral Cove and other places nearby.

HOWEVER, we have had no luck with Stripers as of yet. Been trolling T&W all over the bay - also dunking some live ones, but really have not even seen much in the way of baitfish. No baitfish no stripers I would suspect.

Are things better east (Cape) or west (CT) of here?

Welcome Aboard SmokeBringer. Plenty of local spots to try. One great tool for learning the spots - buy one of those Capt Seagull charts of Narr Bay. Its a basic chart but shows structure highlighted in pink.

Start trying different spots on the chart at different tides / wind conditions. Later - you can go beyond those highlighted areas and add your own honey holes - The Seagull chart is how I started and now I'm feeling pretty confident I can find fish most days. (I said find - not catch!)

Are the charts you mentioned available locally - I was just at Quaker Lane Bait (North Kingstown) at lunchtime. I wonder if they have it?

I believe Quaker Lane has them (near the steps going up into the back room) - try them or some of the other folks who are sponsors here. If not then probably West Marine would have it.

Should try local with the guys at Zeke's for suggestions too. I CAN'T tell you enough how fishy it is where you are.

But I will teach you how to fish for a small parcel of your land :hihi: (and vastly shorten my commute to work & fishing :eek5: )

Thanks to all who have replied to this thread. I have Segull Sportfishing charts for Narragansett Bay and I also picked up the one that has Pt Judith and Block Island.

I shore fished for many years and spent much time at Zeek's (also Quaker Lane bait) buying bait and getting advice in years past. So many of the places on the charts are familiar to me - Mackerel Cove, Austin Hollow, Hull Cove, Great Ledge, etc. However there are MANY spots listed on the charts that I did not know about so I'm anxious to try out a few.

I live on the extreme North end of the Island and can see Hope Island from the house so I'm also quite familar with Conanicut Point. If any of you folks pass around Quonset Channel Green Buoy 3 (G C "3" just off Conanicut Pt. on all of the charts) and see the lights on up here, give me a toot.

Smoke - I've bounced off a few rocks around there :hihi: but you wouldn't want the horn tootin' and waking everyone up.

Couple things to think of, find moving water running across structure, be it a rock pile, point, or a ledge, get your baits/eels down low, and fish night/sunset/sunrise tides. Just improves your odds. The same as surfcasting but more mobility and choice. Also consider that the south side of the island "MAY" be better more often. But I've caught within 100 yds of your house (good shore fishing there :) )

What do you have for a boat??

1996 Angler 252 WA with twin 200 HP outboards. I have it rigged pretty well but am still fixing the odd issue here and there.

I have in in a slip at GBM this summer but am trying to find a slip closer to Jamestown. Perhaps I can squeeze in at Wickford shipyard or Allen's Harbor (I'm on every waiting list known to man) next year.

Hey I ran out of bait a couple of weeks ago whiule on my boat and had to shut it down - I don't know of a bait shop that is close to the bay.

Where do you guys buy bait from your boats? I guess I could wade up Zeek's creek but it's a haul and quite muddy :-)

I've caught a bass or 2 from Conanicut Pt shoreline myself. Here is a picture from Oct (late) 2002 showing me and my (then) 10 year old son with a couple of keepers - mine was 37" and his was 34". That was a wild evening bass and bluefish all over the North End...

Try slow trolling live eels (2-3 knots) with an egg sinker above the swivel around those places you've already mentioned ;)

You can keep live eels in a drilled out 5 gallon bucket tied off to a cleat....oops, sorry - you're still looking for a mooring. That'll solve the bait problem, anyway, once you do get a slot somewhere.

Have you tried Goat Island in Newport?

You may have seen ' Boat fish don't count' around these parts - well, that's not entirely true.

Ya just have to suffer a 20% penalty on weight for cheating :laughs:
