I just had my jack dempseys breed!

150 fry swimmingly around..

hope this batch survives...

the last 5 batches were eaten by other predators in the tank.. or the parents themselves.. I just sucked 'em into a fry net... word!

Cool, I've had a few survive before, need plenty of hiding places.

I have what's called a Fry Bush or something like that.. it's a large circular bush of plants that is thick enough to keep out the adult fish but thin enough to allow the fry to live within its confines without being pestered.

But in order to get a larger number to survive, I've used a gravel hose cleaner to suck the babies into a fry net so that they can live there in peace and grow, hopefully.

Yup, the pair of Dempseys I have are pretty peaceful but sure can hold their own against aggressive fish, such as the Red Tiger Oscar, a Pacu, and the Red Devils. The Dempseys have outlived all 3, killing the latter two for not getting along.

However, I have Red Forest Jewels, and they're pretty much peacefully getting along just fine. As the Rock would say, KNOW YOUR ROLE!

Try segregating them in another tank til they get some meat on their bones. Scoop out a couple of cups of water from the old tank as a "Starter" to help condition the tank.

I do have some extra tanks in storage that I can dig out, I could get it started real quick. I also have a HOB filter to go along with my canister on my big tank right now, I can move the HOB filter to the new tank to condition it real quick, and I also have the exact same HOB filter to put back on the large tank.

I have too much fish stuff. :)

definately, seperate them. You'll have better odds that way. I kept aggressives for quite some time and was surprised that my pacu did real well with the aggressives for being vegetarians. I raised two pacu from 1/4 " to one that was 18" and the other was 24" eventually they got too big for their tank 55 gal and I donated them to a pet store they keep 'em in their main tank. Good luck, if you can get the fry eating krill they'll bulk up real quick just crush the krill between your fingers to powder it a little bit. Good luck:D

OR put them into a rubber made container with some really really small holes drilled in it and drop it into the dottom of the tank till thier big enough to fend for them selves.

i used to have a Gar, and fed it guppies, this is how i kept the feeder guppy babys alive if they happend to breed in the tank.
