they suck arse....
can i get a permit to kill them, somewhere?

never seen so many, as this year. packs,or pods, whatever, 30 or more of them at a clip, traveling and working together. bolder than they used to be, too. one group goes by, another one coming right behind them.

i take all the bad things i said about mung back, seals are worse.

club them, especially the babies. Its amazing how quick the fishing shuts down when they show up

Without meaning to, I clocked one with a large Robert's Ranger right between the eyes. I cast, he surfaced, I heard the crack. He made a splash like someone dropped a Buick into the water. My wife and I giggled.:p

you need 2 things.. a 22 semiautomatic rifle and some empty soda bottles to duct tape to the muzzle.. one bottle for each shot.... no one will hear ya-:devil:

Eben, you forgot to mention the shaving cream inside the plastic bottles, with a hole cut in the bottom of the bottle. :devil:

Of course, you and we are all talking about this hypothetically, as doing this without paying a $200 tax stamp to the gov't and getting ATF approval is a violation of the National Firearms Act. And it's unlawful in RI for a private citizen to be in possession of a suppressor.

On the flip side of things, the seals being back is a GOOD sign, that we haven't f@#$@# things up in New England so bad YET.

The seals being here = there's food here = there's bait for bass here = there's bass here.

In discussions with some of my ex crew... they've said there has been an increased number of seal type predators offshore this year...

They'll keep the seals in check. :D

If we don't control them thery will become as bad as the seals in Monterey and San Fran where people can't even use the docks and floating piers anymore plus the smell and waste ( seal poopoo). They need to be controlled as far as populations are concerned. Net them and ship them to Maine. They eat upwards of forty pounds of fish a day ( thats a lot of sand eel and school bass and window paine flounder and fluke) I could just imagine what they would do to a school of whale Pogies.

Seals are rats with fins and I now declare them a public nuiscance. Look what they have done to the inshore surf fishery at Monomoy, once the best surf fishing water for bass on the east coast ( not to mention the tree huggers form Ohio who now work for the National Wildlife Service who "manage" the Monomoy Wildlife Refuge.)

There are plenty of bass just outside of the island just south and east of the old Chatham inlet and Long Bar, ( does anyone here even remeber Long Bar or am I dating myself?) by the orange pins but they won't come into the surf along the outside of Monomoy because of the seals. If a plaque swept down upon them tomorrow I wouldn't shed a tear. ( That reminds me of those nutz from the stranding network too, got people out on the street living in cardboard but a seal or dolphin strands and there are pleas on the radio for help, warm soup etc., and 200 yuppies show up in thier wetsuits crying and pleading with the whales to save themselves, thirty years ago if dolphins or pilot whales stranded there would be a bunch of "real Cape Codders" down there with lances and knifes hacking off thier heads to sell to Nye Oil Co for extra bonus cash. Thats when the world here was right):af:

seems like seal sex is going unchecked . the kids love seeing seals but daddy doesnt .

things started goin down hill about 1969-70.....:(

Used to be rare to see them, if you did it was like, "Hey!, I saw a seal, cool!"
Then not as rare.... then.... sand dabs... remember them, you could catch them on a shiny hook... fluke, flounder, all started thinning out... last fluke off the beach for me was in the late 80's, probably the last dab, too... more seals, then still more, certain bait fish, were less plentiful, sand eels too. Last half of the 90's till now, there #'s have gone way, way up.
Gettin bolder too, they swim right up to the surfers, and kayakers.. my son was resting on his boogie board, had one pop up right next to him and eyeball him... kid said they have some wicked nasty-assed breath... he was that close.

CS, you think it was that far back? (69-70), fa the seals... the Greys, if I remember right, only were recorded showing up in any significant numbers, like 12-15 years ago.. them winter overs on Monomoy, maybe 10 +.. harbor seals used to be seen now and again before that... if i remember right (i probably don't, tho :rolleyes: )

My neice and nephew and pals( 7-8 Years) were wading Bayside in N. Truro, when a seal popped up right in the middle of them all! Those things will absolutely wreck your grill, flames 6 feet high. Bold little bastage!;)

Old or Ignorant?
 

I've been registered here for a while now and I've posted a few times. Mostly I've enjoyed and appreciated all the knowledge and encouragement that everyone seems to give each other and hoped that at some point I'd have something worthwhile to contribute from time to time. I'm out fishing pretty much any spare time I have. But some of this BS you guys are writing blows my mind. First of all, let me say that I'm no tree or whale hugger. There are plenty of seals out there. Enough that we really don't need to be saving stranded ones off the beach. But where do you guys get off condemning them 'cause they eat the same fish that you try to catch. It might be a tired old cliche' but they've got just as much right to the ocean as you guys, maybe more seeing as how they LIVE THERE. They're part of the environment that you people profess to care so much about. Talk is cheap I guess.
Fun is fun and I enjoy a good joke but you guys sound serious and that's disturbing. I know you're entitled to your opinion. I'm entitled to mine too. That's my two cents there.

At the risk of sounding old and ignorant, I'll just consider yer addy whilst digesting yer comment.....how are things in the Peoples Republic of Brookline, these days, anyway? ;)

Also, you probably are too young and smart to remember, but I've always liked Redd Foxx's theory on opinions..... ;)

Chunker II I agree with you......I mean the part about "at some point you might have something worthwhile to contribute"! I guess now is not the time?;) Just pulling your leg Chunker.:D I think the guys are just frustrated with the abundance of seals out there this year, thats all....I do not believe they mean them any harm. They are simply blowing off a little steam about them is all, which many of us often do here on the site. They have been frustrating me also, and as much as I complain about them, I would never want to see any harm come to them........I just hope my back is turned when it happens!:laugha:

Maybe I shouldn't have ventured into this message board, but my wife will verify that I'm grumpy and my son will verify that I'm a phart. It's nice to discover though, that 45 doesn't count as old. Thanks Karl. Maybe I was irritated that I couldn't hit the beach last night. I read my reply this morning and I guess I did sound a little like a tree/ seal hugger. Well, my therapist has always told me I need to work on my sense of humor. Not apologizing for how i feel but for how I expressed it. Maybe I'm just mad 'cause I haven't caught a keeper. If you guys are ever in Boston near the aquarium let me know and I 'll arrange for you to meet a seal up close and personal. Leave your guns at home though. Tight lines to Ya from the PRB.
