Fluke Rig Question
 

I'm about to give fluke fishing a shot and have a question
on fluke rigs.

I have a Fin Strike fluke rig which consists of a 3- way
swivel with a 4' length of mono attached to one of the
eyes and a plastic skirt, a spinner blade and a couple of
red beads attached to the other. The second eye has a
clip that I figure is for a banks sinker, and the third eye
is the connection to main line. Has any one had any
luck with this type of rig?

I was thinking of eliminating the 3-way swivel, and the
sinker, and substituting a spro barrel swivel with a short length of mono and using a Smiling Bill type jig in place of
the sinker, then tying the 4' length of mono with the skirt
to the same side of the swivel.

Any thoughts?

i should be fine fluke are not a picky fish i have caught ton of fluke on store bought rigs like that allways put some squid or sandeels on the hook

Those commercial rigs are pretty good. I make my own with basically the same componets but beefed up. Instead of a three way, I just use an egg sinker, because sometimes the three way gets tangled up, especially with tricky currents and braided line. Make sure to put a strip of squid on.

I go with the double bucktail rig tipped with squid. Today caught 5 nice fluke, 1 sand shark and 342 skates:af:

Sand Shark? Maybe a smooth dogfish? Did it have a wicked set of teeth? If not it was a doggie.

take my advice....CHANGE OUT THOSE CHEAP hooks on those comm fin strike rigs! One dogfish will wipe you out. If you are going to stay with that rig, at least put on a VMC wide gap or stainless wide gap. It will hold up to larger fish and the eventual dog fish.

Use squid strip and a large sand eel for bait and just enough weight to hold bottom.

You could try a chrome ball (with squid strip) in place of a lead weight.

Timely thread. I have some of those rigs, too, and plan on trying them, out this weekend. I had read somewhere fluke rigs tipped with chubs are supposed to be a flattie favorite, but mostly here I see the recommendation of squid and sand eels. Are chubs worth catching for fluke rigs?

yeah but you need to keep them alive. Actaully a fluke will each just about any live fish it can swallow. (snappers are killers)

But I have to say I have been seeing fluke puke up lots of sandeels when I bring them up. (also whole squid)


look for drop offs with moving water and keep it on the bottom.
