Flyfishing?????????????
 

Hi all, New to the saltwater longwand,I've been wondering the beaches for many years chasing the line siders and Bluefish. However I, A poor man have decided to try a rich mans sport. I recently purchased a Redington rod & reel. I went with the Cortland 444 fly line, Intermiadate. All in 9 wt. I hope this was all a good choice! So my question to anyone who may read this is what would be the best choice be for the fly box? I'll be tying most of them myself do to the fact that I just spent what I consider a good chunk of cash on the rod & reel. ( my convential rigs only cost about $275 each. Dont tell my wife) Any way,thanks for any advice. Pete.

I presume you mean what type of box to store your flies in.

For most of my flies I like a Sci Angler's style box. Doesn't have to be Sci Anglers per se. Cabelas makes a nice box very similar and a lot cheaper. I like the rippled/flat style.

For lager flies there's a thicker box (don't know the brand name) that works out better without crushing the flies. And you can always use a Plano type box with long compartments. Just put the flies in plastic sleeves first.

Jaiem, why the plastic sleeves?

The plastic sleeves help keep the flies individually wrapped so they're cleaner and a wet fly doesn't get the others moist.

BRIAN,everyone love thoes brightly colored boxes, they look great an the prices are up there. you can pay as much as $69.00 for some wheatly one.BUT as jamie has said an I also use the sleves for some time now an love them I STILL have a bunch of PLANO boxes w/ all my flies in.BUT have set up with the one to use in the sleves to carry around on the beach.

I've used ALL types of fly boxes. Here's what I find is the best and most compact-Everyone gets stuff in padded envelopes via UPS and the mailman, right? If it's a rectangle, cut both long ends and, of course, the short end where you removed your mailed item. Now you have sort of a booklet which, when opened, has a nice padded bubbly plastic inside, right? Cut this padded booklet to the size you know will fit inside your fly bag (I used about 4x7")and put all your flies on both sides. It fits flat in your bag, you won't lose flies from the bubbly stuff and when you come home, just open the booklet, prop it open on top of your bag and all the flies dry just fine for the next time fishing. The very best envelopes are either foil outside (as in refrigerated packages) or those white plastic ones. These will not absorb the salt water moisture, especially at night, which could lead to rusting of your hooks if not dried properly. With this system, you can easily fit five packs of flies in any bag. ]
