Has anybody heard anything about this over the past few days?
I heard that one of my customers from Marion got it and is in rough shape. I’ll hold off on his name until I confirm.

Last year another person from marion got the same thing.

from eating fish...... i hope not.:(

from either fishing with an open wound or getting hooked.

I haven't heard anything recently but I do know that an open wound is an invitation to getting this. The victims often need flesh removed to avoid the spread of it. Make sure if you poke yourself with a hook,knife,etc that you put something on it, also be careful handling fish with cuts on your hands, this is a nasty thing to get.

I remember the story from previously about the fisherman who developed it after he had been cleaning a Bluefish and contracted it that way. Another guy was on a fishing vessel and met the same fate because of an open wound.

Its nasty - it starts eating away, hospital started cutting pieces of person off and then your organs shut down. :(

It is no joke. I guess this is another reason to promote catch & release. ;)

Damn. I often cut, scrape, or poke myself when fishing and dont even realize it initially. Tonight for instance, I landed a schoolie in the marsh, and 5 minutes later I look at my right forefinger, and its smeared with blood. Nice cut right between the knuckles. Didnt even feel it lol.

Luckily, every fish I have caught in the Hampton Marsh has looked healthy so far. Havent seen any sores and ulcers on any fish.

This is pretty scary though.

Photobacterium damsela is what causes flesh eating disease from fish. Most humans immune system is strong enough to take care of the invader. It's those who have some sort of severe immune deficiency that have to worry about it.

damn, i fished with open wounds sometimes. but im suspecting that my immunity won't last if this continues. i got a staph from touching mackerel and hooking bait with an open wound.

It's hard to find a good pair of gloves that allow you to tie, to handle a fish, and to cast comfortable. And also to protect you from getting wet, sweating, and from the bacterias.

My wife is a doc and she has seen this a few times. (I can't recall the name) but it is bad news. Spreads very fast and this thing is resistant to most antibiotics. There is one or two I think that work but when it becomes resistant to that we all are in deep trouble. If you see some infection that looks bad you will need serious attn. pronto! Don't just walk into some clinic...head to hospital that can deal with infectious diseases.

It is important to WASH your hands WELL with HOT water and Anti-bacterial soap each and every time you clean fish. Even the smallest knick in your hand is enough to introduce this to your system.

She showed me some photos of guys hands..very nasty, in some cases you will need to get it amputated to stop it from killing you. (no kidding)

Buy some good soap and wash up!

Yeah,it's nothing to fool with.My high school footbal coach died from it about 10 years ago when he cut himself while cleaning a bluefish.I always have cuts on my hands and carried some peroxide in the truck and slapped some on my hands after fishing for awhile, even though i C and R . but got lax and don't do it anymore.
Don't know if it would really prevent it,and it's no substitute for being aware and careful.

Confirmed the guys name is Pete Kelly from marion he kept his boat in Fairhaven.

I believe the gentleman who died from this last year was from Halifax...

I hate gloves, but considering I peel skin off my thumb and forefinger regularly from all the bass I catch, might be time to consider some sort of glove. The problem with gloves is the get wet and might actually be worst than just rinsing off in the salt after every fish. I know there are some thin neoprenes available, but those things get hot in the summer. Are any of those sun gloves the southern guides us waterproof?

I hope its enough to use anti-bacterial soap when you get home. I am fanatical about washing my hands well when I'm home and when I have cuts, I use that purell anti-bact lotion. It stings like hell, but it gives me some peace of mind that I killed some micro bugs.

I was carrying that stuff on the boat too, but I'm out.

Cuts are unavoidable, I guess the best we can do is make sure we clean 'em out well.

Go buy some powerful soap and wash up each and every time you handle fish. Get a big tube of neosporen ointment and put it on each and every knick you get after you have washed. Don't fool around with bugs like this.

I don't were gloves until it gets real cold (nov fishing) and then I use the neo's with the fingers slits (glacier gloves)

If I comm fished I would wear gloves no matter how hot.

Ever get spiked by a striper dorsel fin ?:eek: You need to deal with these too!! You can get a nasty infection (not just the flesh eating kind) that can put an end to your fishing for quite some time.

I got spiked last month. I washed my hands when I got home and put a band aid and a neosprin on it. I hope that it doesn't eat my itnernal organs. I am too young to die.

Since a few years ago when the first guy in that area it this flesh eating thing has been constantly on my mind. My hands look like raw hamburger right now and my skin is constantly peeling off my hands from wetness and handling bait and fish. Really scares the crap out of me especially with the number of fish that I have caught this year with what appear to be sores on them.

A good friend of mine sold him the boat he runs now. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family also. Very sad. Patrick is correct, he has already lost a leg. This bacteria moves VERY fast and is deadly dangerous. Be careful out there all of you.

Oh my goodness. He has lost a leg??? I will be praying for him and anyone else who is infected with this. This is terrible.....

I have heard that he lost the leg to the hip!! And he was also the guy involed in a fatal accadent in Vinyard Sound a couple of years ago??

I remember seeing something on TV a long rime ago about a guy who got this when he bumped his leg on a trailer hitch. Creepy

Can you get this from any fish....or just those with lesions or sores on them?
