And a few of these guys this morning :) Bonito?

quick decision 08-14-2004 09:45 AM

Do you have a permit? Scoolie yellow fin and a bonito.

179 08-14-2004 09:58 AM

Yes I have a permit. All the tuna caught were released.

The vertical stripes on the first fish threw me for a loop, I couldn't match it up with any fish on the charts I have.

quick decision 08-14-2004 10:31 AM

its only a crime if you get caught.;) Nice job! how was the fight?

beachwalker 08-14-2004 11:21 AM

you sure that ain't a skipjack ?

quick decision 08-14-2004 11:37 AM

i dont know, mabey? dont skipjacks have stripes on there belly?

thefishingfreak 08-14-2004 01:46 PM

first one is a bluefin.they have those stripes when there little.no long dorsal, like a yellowfin
2'nd one is a bonito.

teezer 08-15-2004 06:29 AM

I agree, 1st fish is a bluefin which have to 27" to keep and the second is a bonito. Both are great fish to catch on light tackle.

Never mind, I didn't see your second post where you said you released all the fish.

It's still a good idea to be able to ID various tuna, in case you ever want to keep one for the grill.

Seems like I'm not the only one confused I see suggestions from YellowFin to SkipJack to BlueFin. Thanks for the help :)

RIROCKHOUND 08-16-2004 06:36 AM

BFT top
bonito bottom

All i see is sushi :D

179 08-16-2004 06:58 AM

OK- I think thats 3-4 votes for schoolie BFT, I'm going with that :).

devils fiddle 08-16-2004 08:08 AM

bluefin
bonito=great bait

quick decision 08-16-2004 08:21 AM

Bluie fin, my mistake. Sorry.:)

MakoMike 08-16-2004 08:59 AM

FWIW, for next time. The easiest and most reliable way to tell BFT from YFT or Bigeyes is by the pectoral fins. If the Pec. fin doesn't extend beyond the origin of the second dorsal its a BFT if it does its either a YFT or a bigeye.

beachwalker 08-16-2004 09:27 AM

good answer

i don't think i've ever seen them that small

hope to. couple years back those little bastards were in the rips off the shoals here and we all know about Mike

that must have been sweet

Is that your scout in the pic. If so, do you like the boat?
