Painful Lesson Learned
 

Always, and I mean ALWAYS recheck your @$#%!& Drag.

Fishing this morning I hook into what Feels like a really REALLY good fish then it hits me that he's not taking any line. I reach for the drag to loosen it and POP!!!! the line snaps. 30lb Big Game and it snapped like nothing.

I had cranked down the drag because of a snag on the last cast and then forgot to reset it when I casted back out. This was after I had another decent sized fish throw the hook after about 2 minutes a 1/2 hour earlier.

DOHHHH!!!!!!

Also , double check the drag at the beginning of every fishing session. Sometimes when the reel has sat around for a few days , the drag gets stuck for some reason. Always loosen , give a few pulls , then readjust for the night.

When I was about 14 my father and I fished a blitz at a beach in Newport, big bass, lots of redweed... got balled up in weed, cranked the drag, cleaned the line... cast out my popper (probably on a wire leader:smash: I was dumb then)
and my drag started screaming..... then pop!
Too bad... he took a mid 30lb fish.... probably would have been my first shore 30...
Almost 12 years later still stuck in the upper 20's for shore fish.... :af:
makes me mad just thinking about it....

I've lost several fish on big runs this year. The kind of run where you wonder if the fish will stop long enough to get some line back. I haven't had my 50 pound braid or my 30 pound floro leader fail yet. But on 3 occasions the hook has just pulled after fighting the fish for several minutes. Very frustrating. I too, need to check my drag more often. mY probelm is I tend to cinch it down every now and then to get more leverage around the boat on smaller fish that are heading for the prop.

Ihave been fishing a looser and looser drag all year. Thats what its there for, esp. with braid.

My most common problem is leaving the drag too loose, so when my 1st hit of the night comes, i try to set the hook, but the reel just lets some line out & the plug stay put.
