Spooling Fireline on 704
 

I want to switch my 704 from mono to 20# Fireline. Does anybody have a rule of thumb on how much 20# mono backing to put on so that a 300# spool of the fireline will fill the rest of the reel spool?

yep... if you have a 300 yard spool, spool it on to your 704 1st. when you get all the line on there, tie on your backing and fill your 704 up to the top. then take all the line off of yoru reel somehow, i used a funny contraption i made on my cordless drill and a spare 704 spool.. then flip the line... tie on the backing and re-spool...

I figured I could do that, but the "somehow" is the hitch, plus I'd be worried about twisting the line. When you did it, was it just a little bit of backing you ended up with, or more :confused:

I used 50lb powerpro and i ended up with a little. I only did it once, because after i decided i liked it, i got a bulk spool of something like 1500 yards so i dont have to worry about that anymore. look at yoru reel id should say how many yards of mono it will hold, then look at the package of fireline it should have the mono equivalent... then its all algebra from there...

You're not gonna need much backing to allow the 300 yards fit on the spool in full. Maybe 10 yards or so, just enough to cover the spool arbor.

With the thirty pound PP - I usually put on a little less than 1/4 of a spool of mono and then wind on the braid - there is some waste but not much.

That's what I do put it on backwards, take it off with an old beachmaster convrtch, take it off the beachmaster with my 704zs or any other reel always a perfect fill.
