Bird Hunting

Good Morning

I recently got a wirehaired pointing griffon. I have read several books, and plan to train her to point, etc.

one big problem is that I do not hunt. I have never hunted. I have never owned a gun. Nobody in my family has ever owned a gun, other than I guess my dad and grandfather when they were in the navy, but thats it...

Hoping that someone on the board could kind of give me a real basic "bird hunting 101." IE, types of guns/ammo, hunting "etiquette," hunting styles, when to go, what to bring, strategy, etc... that kind of stuff. You know, the kind of stuff that you learn when you are a kid that your old man taught you.

This is not my only source for info, I am also doing quite a bit of internet searching and reading, but those real basic kind of like "duh" facts are nowhere to be found.

It would also be nice to meet another rhode islander that is familar with bird hunting in RI.

Any thoughts or comments would be helpful.

Thanks
Zac

Take the dog to a professional bird dog trainer.
It'll save you alot of time/gruntwork/etc.

They'll train both you and the dog. :D

If you want to get into bird hunting , you won't be disappointed. I have been hunting since I was a kid, and I absolutely love it. I have a German shorthaired Pointer. You can find some good books on how to train your dog, thats a good way to learn if you don't have someone to show you. Some of them do a step by step program, you should follow them in the exact steps that they tell you. At first it may not make sense but by the time your done it will. Be patient with your pooch, this will take time. First thing to do is build yourself a training table, it's a must have and not expensive to build. Most important commands to start with is Come, and Whoa. If your dog learns those, your half way there. Do a session with your dog everyday, 5-10 min a day is much better than 30 twice a week. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.
