What technique to use?

What's the best technique or lure to use if the striper is just jumpin 2 feet away from the shoreline chasing shad?

A net.

Or try to snag one of the shad and liveline it. I would try a spook type top water.

Take a couple of steps back..:D

If you can grab one of those shad, live line em. Throw a storm shad, or other shad bodied soft plastic like a bassassasin, unless there are blues mixed in.

jbapinoy 09-21-2004 09:36 AM

is it legal to throw a net on the shoreline?

Krispy 09-21-2004 09:37 AM

I would say a storm shad, those can be some of the most difficult situations, when fish are at your feet. Try a teaser too.

if its rocky and the fish are at my feet I look 100 feet to the left, then 100 feet to the right, looking for any sort of structure i can get out on.. When i get out on that point, i'll cast paralell to the shore.. This works much better than casting straight out.

Ya know - it really depends on the location.

Whereabouts are you experiencing this problem? :smokin:

PM me so's not to burn the spot.....

Eben

you mean instead of casting up front I should cast sideways?

FishermanTim 09-21-2004 09:49 AM

I believe using a small bait casting net (4' -6' diameter) is legal if you're looking to catch bait, but not stripers. Although, if one of those stripers happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, whose fault is that?
Seriously, bait nets are legal for bait only.
I would try casting a net away from where the bass are feeding, or you'll spook them.

Good luck.

yes! and if your on a beach, just run down the beach a bit and cast diaginal... youll get more time with your lure in the strike zone.

He has the right idea.A particular spot I fish has a minor dropoff a few feet from shore that runs the whole length of the shoreline.I wade out just past this dropoff and casting parallel to the shore can be very productive, especially
when the tide is really moving.

partsjay 09-21-2004 11:26 AM

do it old school style....use your hands. no seriously...try a rattle trap.

reelecstasy 09-21-2004 01:16 PM

I have similar situations at one of my spots.. I will usually go down the beach 75-80' wade out and cast parralel to shore with a poppa or a storm shad...When in doubt, sling a eel past the "spot" and work it sloooow bumpin on bottom. They can't resist thoose slimmy suckas (IMO)

I've been having some success casting along the beach at an angle so I retrieve along the outside edge of the pods of fish rather than right through the blender fo teeth that seems to occupy the center of most blitzes. I picked up a few bass in an area where only rats with fins were being caught.........

CANAL RAT 09-22-2004 06:32 PM

i would say a popper with alot of action or a big Kastmaster

tynan19 09-22-2004 08:39 PM

That happened to myself in the canal a few weekends back. There were some nice flops but they wouldn't hit anything. It made me feel like sh#t.
