308L in a roll

anyone using it this way? seems there wood b less waste than the 3' straight rods.

Karl F 09-23-2004 07:02 AM

How many feet in a roll?
I would think that would be the way to go, heck, it ain't going to go bad. Your going to stretch the curve out of it anyhow, should work fine. Good thinking, CS.

BigBo 09-23-2004 07:41 AM

Christian got himself a roll of it.:D ;)

zacs 09-23-2004 07:43 AM

The spools are sold by the lb.

I don't know how long 2 lbs. is.

Hmmm...

rolls are 20lbs i buy and bend....they are roughly 1000' long.

capesams 09-23-2004 11:38 AM

Salty....how much for store price u finger,,over the counter for a 25lber. roll that is......lrg.er rolls don't tend to bend the wire that much..should be easy to straightin out.

thats .035 need .062 but your in the right ball park.

what about using 316L vs 308?

fairly similar in bendability isn't it?

UserRemoved1 09-23-2004 04:44 PM

have to look up the price CS, not sure what it was. I just did 7 rolls and had them bent. I got pre bends now if you want some.....9" and 12" finished lengths.

crashfromamesbury 09-23-2004 07:35 PM

salty whats the difference between 316L and 308L

i know they are close in temper..

I've used both and they are almost the same to work with. The 316 is more expensivee and as far as the 308 and 308L the L is a little harder to bend (*more nickle I believe)

UserRemoved1 09-24-2004 04:40 AM

Yep more nickel and I believe more chromium...

316 is much better at corrosion resistance.....

Anything UNDER 308 cannot be used with VMC hooks or you will see electrolysis happen rapidly and the hooks will rust in HOURS....

Fishpart 09-24-2004 05:34 AM

In the 300 series of Stainless Steels, the higher the number the more corrosion resistant. Don't know the particulars on the alloys but as the material gets more Ni and Cr it becomes tougher to bend especially after it has work put into it like straightening to make 36" rods or if it is spooled right after drawing without an anneal....

when did you become a metallurgist ?
didnt we talk about this ?
I would like you to show me #304 that rusts, and i will eat it right there on the spot. maybe your VMC hooks are having a reaction to the CORE in the 308L , the core is what makes it SOFTER.. thats why i went with the #304 which is softer due to the annealing process & no core. and NO it does not stretch too much as some suggested. You are dealing with .062 steel wire. Do you think its really going to "let go" I would love to see a #304 wire let go on a wood plug. that would have to be an 800 lb bluefin at the other end.

if you guys want 308L ON A ROLL i can easily order a skid of it.
I thought you wanted the #308 in " 36" and it had better be straight" stuff ?

i am cranky today
if i dont get to fish soon, i will
:af: :af: :af: :af: :af:

Diamond Tackle 09-24-2004 05:58 PM

also i would be glad to show the TEST RESULTS on the #304 wire.
you may be surprised.
you guys are looking for a unicorn.
no disrespect intended.

again
i grouchy, so forgive me

bassmaster 09-24-2004 06:52 PM

tinman when u come pick up ya schtuff I show you vmc that rust on TWO kinds of 304 wire....from completely different sources.

Now go lay down ya grumpy bastage :smash:

And no I not a metallurgist I make GRAIN

RI Popper 09-24-2004 07:23 PM

Hey Tinsnips there is no such thing as unicorns.

Salty is just listening to too much heavey meatal maybe???? maybe:confused:

Tinman send me a pm with a price per roll with amount in it. I may be swithing to .050 for thru wires. Not sure how much a difference it will make. I'm doing some tests now. I definately like to stay with 308.

Popper boy.
