he played the game hard, but i think he's a real pos!!! no hall for you!

Squid kids Dad 09-24-2004 08:52 PM

Again I agree with AH...He did play the game all out...But his after hour activities did him in...No hall for you!!!

BigFish 09-24-2004 10:48 PM

That movie looks like a contrived piece of sh*t! Won't bother wasting my time on it!:smash:

28inches 09-25-2004 04:45 AM

Rose is a bum, and espn movies are lousy.

The Dad Fisherman 09-25-2004 01:03 PM

So your saying that Quality of Character should be a determining factor in Hall Of Fame selection.

Because we would never induct people who were short on "Nice Guy" appeal

you'd never see players Like Ty Cobb in there, who was a Violent, Mean Spirited Drunk.

I personally think that the Hall of Fame should be judged by your performance on the field ........and thats it.

I'm not saying Rose is a saint.....but there are plenty of other hall of famers that weren't exactly Boy Scouts.

When Rose played, He played just the way we want all of our kids to play, Hard and w/ hustle. He owns a solid dozen Major and National League Records. I think we should lighten up and let the guy in.....He earned it.

Besides I'm stuck at work on a saturday and I need some heated discussion to liven things up.

KLMulder 09-25-2004 03:15 PM

you seem to forget that he bet on baseball while he was a manager i.e. on the field. He bet on his own team. He is banned and I hope I never see the day he gets back into baseball. I think his time as a player was great and should get him in, but he blew it. Put him in after he is dead.

The Dad Fisherman 09-25-2004 03:58 PM

I didn't forget that....I just don't think its enough to keep him out.

I see nothing wrong w/ betting on the team you are managing as long as your betting on them to win. There's no proof that he ever bet AGAINST a team he was managing. If they could prove that I'd agree w/ you a hundred percent...but they haven't.

Last I heard you were innocent until PROVEN guilty.

28inches 09-25-2004 04:17 PM

Dad- imho, being a drunken, violent racist isn't enuff to keep somebody out of the Hall. But betting on baseball is.

Also, I would never want my kids to play like him if that means doing what he did to Fosse during a meaningless All-Star game.

KLMulder 09-25-2004 04:22 PM

He admitted to MLB that he bet on Baseball. In the agreement that was reached MLB would not release any information about his activity's and he would agree to be banned for life. It has not been until the last few years that he has admitted to the public that he bet on Baseball including his own team. IMHO if you bet on your team you are betting both way's not just to win.

Uh huh. You don't think that in a 162 game season, the fact that a manager has $25,000 riding on his team to win, say, 20 selected games, might make him manage those games like they were Game 7 of the Series instead of looking at the bigger picture? That he might risk injury to a good pitcher who was complaining of some soreness, or start someone who was due for a rest, or send up a pinch hitter who was nursing an injury, or deplete his bullpen trying to get back into a 7-1 game instead of throwing his 11th pitcher out there? I don't have a problem with him betting as a player, but there's a huge problem with him doing so as a manager.

As far as betting on his team to lose---think about it for a minute. What freakin' idiot of a bookie in his right mind would take such a bet from a manager/gambler in a position to control the outcome of that bet? Do you think a bookie would take a bet from a boxer who wanted to bet that he'd lose a fight? If you do, please tell me that bookie's name :D

So yeah, I believe he never bet against his team, for that reason, and that reason alone.

You know what I mean.....

He played the game hard and w/ fire. That was wrong what he did in the All-star game, I agree, but you can't knock the guys work ethic.

Mike P, those are some valid points that I never considered before. Maybe he should be held to a higher standard as a manager. But he wouldn't be inducted into the Hall for what he did as a Manager it would be for what he did as a player.

You guys do realize that I'm not trying to start trouble, I just think this is a good topic to really discuss.

By the way I'm still at work so this is cool
